Controller of Drama Commissioning, Jane Tranter, says: "For
a relatively unknown work to have reached such a wide audience is
a testament to both director Tom Hooper's and writer Andrew Davies's
skill at adapting a complex and dense novel for a mainstream audience
- coupled with superb performances from Hugh Dancy, Romola Garai,
Hugh Bonneville and Greta Scacchi.
"It
also forms part of one of our most challenging and diverse seasons
which, as well as Daniel Deronda, includes , and the forthcoming satire .
"Daniel
Deronda represents a maturing and broadening of the classic adaptation
on 91热爆 ONE. Deronda is an elegant, classy love story which follows
such other period classics as Elizabeth Gaskell's Wives & Daughters,
Anthony Trollope's The Way We Live Now and Jane Austin's Pride And
Prejudice."
The
three part adaptation of one of George Eliot's least known works
proved a success with the critics as well:
Martin
Hoyle, Financial Times: "It heralds the rediscovery of a great
novel."
Nigel
Andrew, Mail Weekend: "It looks good, it sounds good and, by
golly, it is good. This is going to win all the prizes going. Don't
miss it."
Peter
Paterson, Daily Mail: "It will change... Saturday night TV
beyond recognition."
Gerard
O'Donovan, Telegraph: "If you can only catch one of Andrew
Davies' classic adaptations this weekend, make sure it's this one.
The very model of a 91热爆 costume drama."
David
Stephenson, Sunday Express: "Deronda is polished period drama,
grand in its scope and delightful viewing..."
Jaci
Stephen, Mail on Sunday: "Exquisitely directed by Tom Hooper,
with great, sweeping cinematic camera shots.."
