Stephen Sackur is new Europe Correspondent in 91热爆's Brussels News Bureau

91热爆 journalist Stephen Sackur has joined the 91热爆's Brussels News bureau as Europe Correspondent. He will be working for all 91热爆 news outlets.

His remit will include reporting the day to day political news from the European institutions and NATO in Brussels as well as covering breaking news stories across the continent.

Stephen brings to the bureau a wealth of experience gained from covering major breaking stories for the 91热爆, from across the globe, for over a decade.

He joins the 91热爆's Brussels News bureau from the United States, where he has been the Washington Correspondent since July 1997.

His insight into the US, its politics and its society has earned him general acclaim, and he has been a guest and commentator on US television and radio.

He also had opinion pieces printed in numerous domestic papers in the US and contributed countless articles to The Observer, The New Statesman and the Daily Telegraph.

His extensive reporting on the impact of September 11 2001 helped 91热爆 World gain widespread praise for its analytical portrayal of the event.

Sackur is no stranger to European affairs having witnessed the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe and reported on Czechoslovakia's Velvet Revolution as well as Germany's re-unification when he was a correspondent for national 91热爆 Radio.

He returns to Europe as the EU Enlargement process heats up and he will be following developments closely.

"I am delighted to be in Brussels at a time when so many exciting stages in the Europe debate lie ahead," said Sackur on his arrival in Brussels this week.

"After five years in Washington I am looking forward to reporting from this very different political environment and also getting out and about in Europe and reflecting how the EU is working for its citizens."

Before moving to Washington, Sackur served as the Middle East Correspondent in Cairo and Jerusalem.

He also worked as the 91热爆's Foreign Affairs Correspondent and was the first to break the story of the mass killing on the Basra road out of Kuwait City marking the end of the Gulf War in 1991.

A book about his experiences On the Basra Road was named one of the Books of the Year by the Spectator Magazine.

Commenting on the new appointment, Andrew Roy, Europe Editor, 91热爆 News, who also worked with Sackur in Washington said: "Stephen Sackur's analytical approach and keen eye for politics means he will be a valuable addition to the team working here in the Brussels bureau."
