Anne Robinson and Phillip Schofield count down to Test The Nation

Where do the cleverest people in the UK come from? Which football teams have the smartest supporters? Are left-handers more intelligent than right-handers? And could students be brighter than their teachers?

Whether you want to make comparisons with your peers or you simply want to know for yourself - everyone can find out where they fare in the IQ stakes when Anne Robinson and Phillip Schofield Test The Nation on 91热爆 ONE on Saturday 11 May 2002.

Anne Robinson says: "Never mind who always claims to be the clever clogs in the family or the egg-head at the office. This is a chance to test who truly is the smartest. Reputations will be made. Reputations will be ruined!"

Co-presenter Phillip Schofield says: "I'm really excited to be involved in what is one of the most ambitious, live projects the 91热爆 has undertaken. The results will be interesting and I hope not too shocking!"

According to some sources Marilyn Monroe had an IQ of 163 making her an intellectual equal to Einstein (160+) and it's quoted that Madonna has a figure of 140, also putting her amongst the top 2% in the population. Test The Nation is a unique opportunity for people to find out about themselves as individuals as well as being part of a huge national survey. Whether you're an Einstein or a Madonna - everyone can join in the challenge and help to discover whether preconceptions about intelligence hold true.

Running over the course of one evening, 70 specially designed questions examine the brain power of the nation covering five areas: language, memory, logic, numbers, and perception. Meanwhile six groups made up of identical twins, builders, teachers, blondes, publicans and students will answer the same 70 questions live in the Test The Nation studio. Are publicans naturally inclined to be knowledgeable and do students simply study their way to the top? Will identical twins have identical IQs or does being born first offer an in-built advantage? Results collated from these participants - plus those taking part on the web - will help to determine the current state of the nation's IQ.

Viewers, internet users and digital TV subscribers can all take up the challenge along with the studio groups and celebrities from the worlds of music, sport, politics and entertainment.

Lorraine Heggessey, 91热爆 ONE Controller says: "We're always looking for new ways of actively involving and engaging the audience. This is a major live event in which the whole nation will be able to take their own IQ test. It's a bit of fun but I hope it will be revealing too."

John Kaye Cooper, executive producer of Test The Nation for Talent Television says: "At the same time that this unique television event goes out live on 91热爆 ONE, viewers at home, internet users and digital TV owners can all play along simultaneously - creating the biggest IQ test ever attempted in the UK.

"Pit your wits against your family, or invite your friends around for the evening, then take part in Test The Nation to find out once and for all who聮s the top dog in your household, in the studio and across the nation."

By the end of the night participants will have their own personal IQ score. By comparing it to the average IQ set at 100, people taking part will be able to rate themselves to the person sitting next to them or to people from all over the country. A score between 90 and 110 indicates an average intelligence; over 110 points is in the highest 25%; meanwhile, anyone with an IQ of 130 or above can consider themselves in the top 2% of the population.

Specially devised and verified by psychologist Dr Colin Cooper from Queen's University, Belfast, each question has four possible answers and must be completed within a prescribed time limit.

"There is a lot of confusion in people's minds about the difference between IQ and general knowledge," says Dr Cooper. "And it is worth stressing that the 91热爆's Test The Nation is a unique programme. The questions have been properly standardised and carefully constructed so that the results will be extremely meaningful. It tests several types of thinking skills and doesn't require any knowledge over and above that which you would pick up at school."

91热爆i on the web and interactive TV is an integral part of the night's events. In the run up to the programme opens its virtual doors to the mental gym where people can start getting in some cerebral training in time for the big day. The 91热爆i website can also help users work out their weaknesses with mental agility tests, practical intelligence, spatial awareness and verbal skills.

Test The Nation is a Talent Television Production for 91热爆 ONE made in conjunction with the format holders - Dutch independent producers, Eyeworks. It is produced by Nichola Hegarty and directed by Simon Staffurth. Executive producer for the 91热爆 is Jon Beazley and for Talent Television, John Kaye Cooper. Test the Nation has also been produced in Holland, Germany, Belgium, Italy and France is about to launch in Spain and Portugal.

Notes to Editors

An IQ test measures several areas of intelligence, including verbal skills, memory, logic, mental arithmetic and visualisation skills. Intelligence tests only measure a person's ability to reason - they do not measure other qualities such as character, personality, talent, persistence and application.

How to take part

It's the biggest IQ test ever undertaken simultaneously with viewers at home, web users and digital TV zappers. Get involved on the night to find out your own score.

At home聟

Either fill in a scorecard or simply use pen and paper to mark your answers on the night. Then tune in to part two of the programme to find out how to convert your score into IQ.

On the web聟

Log on at today to register your details. By doing this you'll download a Flash application which means you'll be ready to take the test when the programme broadcasts live in May. On the night, log on to the website to download the test questions and wait for the TV programme to begin. The test takes about one hour and can be completed offline.

When the live programme starts, the Flash application opens on your screen and the questions pop up in synchronisation with the TV show, allowing the allotted time for users to 'strain their brain' and make a selection. Once the test is complete, the Flash application will submit the final answer form via the website. Your score will be calculated and sent back to you by 91热爆i, then tune in to the second half of the programme on 91热爆 ONE to check out the answers and see how the nation got on.

Interactive TV...

Viewers with Digital TV Satellite (Sky) or Digital Terrestrial (itvDigital) platforms will also be able to take the test at home through their TV. Press the Red Key to access the interactive service, then as the questions appear on screen, use the colour fast-text keys to answer A, B, C, or D. The interactive application stores your answers and works out your IQ there and then. The only golden rule is don't switch channels - if you leave the programme, your answers will be lost and you won't be able to get a final IQ score!

Digital Cable (ntl and Telewest) TV viewers will be able to take the test after the programme.
