Radio Times announces the '24 shows that changed the face of TV'

To celebrate the new series of one of the most groundbreaking television programmes of recent years - 24 - Radio Times has compiled a list of the most important TV shows from the last five decades.

Among the programmes credited with changing the face of television are Grange Hill, The Simpsons, Z Cars, Coronation Street and Top of the Pops. Radio Times also acknowledges the people behind each show, examines why they were so successful, and names other shows they inspired such as Hollyoaks, South Park, The Sweeney, EastEnders and The Tube.

In order to compile the list, Radio Times interviewed a broad range of TV industry experts including controllers, producers and writers.

Pioneering shows such as Coronation Street, Life On Earth and The Simpsons all make the list due to the ingenuity of creators Tony Warren, David Attenborough, and Matt Groening. Radio Times says programmes such as Doctor Who - which not only spawned US copies such as Star Trek - also had a greater influence on UK audiences than any other programme of its genre.

Other revolutionary TV shows that also make the list include The Word, for the post-pub TV generation, Grandstand for being the world's longest-running live sports programme and The Forsyte Saga for giving birth to the costume drama.
