Radio Times introduces 'Family Viewing' symbols

Radio Times is introducing two key new features in its next issue aimed at encouraging family television viewing to coincide with National Parents Week. The changes were planned ahead of the recent ITC/91热爆/BSC joint report, which found that parents would like better information about the content of programmes aimed at children.

The magazine is launching a special weekly review section called 'Radio Times Kids Panel' where it invites children to give their -often very frank- opinions on current television programmes aimed at them. Radio Times also asks their parents whether or not they would be happy for their children to watch the programme alone and discovers whether the subject matter raised any specific questions from the children. A different family is featured each week from around the UK, and the Spooner family from Sussex is the first to participate.

The second new feature being introduced is the 'Family Viewing' symbol. This distinctive icon will work in tandem with the 'Radio Times Kids Panel' by highlighting certain programmes on the TV listings pages which Radio Times feel are suitable for the entire family.

Radio Times' editor, Gill Hudson, says: "As a parent myself, I understand that some programmes aimed at children do not always make suitable viewing for certain age groups. With the addition of the 'Radio Times Kids Panel' and the new 'Family Viewing' icon in the listings section, our readers can now plan and monitor TV viewing for the entire family with a much better awareness of whether the content is appropriate or not."
