File : Nick Clegg became the first Liberal Democrat to take
an elected seat in the East Midlands for more than 60 years after
his party polled 12.8% of the vote in the European elections of June
1999. Originally he trained as a journalist but gained an affinity
with European affairs after managing EU funded aid projects in the
former Soviet Union. He was also a senior policy adviser to the vice
president of the European Commission.

Fact File : Born in Derbyshire, Phillip Whitehead's early career
was as a television producer on programmes like Panorama, The World
At War and the Kennedys. From 1970 - 83 he was Labour MP for Derby
North. In 1994 he was elected MEP for Staffordshire East, since when
he has specialised in Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and the Environment.

Fact File : From brussels to Brussels. Chris Heaton-Harris
used to be chairman of a fruit and vegetable firm before becoming
an MEP. Now he is campaigning for a better deal for the counties farmers,
protesting with other MEPs over the French stance on British beef.
