March 2002
Nottingham's 'tram idol' is announced
tram

the Nottingham tram needs a voice
After all the speculation our Nottingham 'tram idol' has been chosen.

Last month we brought you the six finalists.

The competition was closely fought but Wendy Smith is to be the 'voice of the tram'.

Now that her voice has been chosen to make announcements in a public place - it needs to be analysed by specialists to ensure it meets all the necessary requirements!

Wendy's voice will now be scientifically tested by experts to make sure it works in all kinds of situations!

For example, will it be clear enough for foreign visitors, and will it be easy for people with hearing difficulties to understand ?

We'll make sure the final results when they're announced!

Trams are due to start running from November next year, and as well as electronic display boards indicating the next stop, there will be announcements over speakers on the new vehicles to make it as easy as possible for everyone to use them.

What the judges were looking for was "a warm, clean and friendly voice", according to Chris Theobold, a professional voiceover artist.

"Lots of visitors come to the city and we want people to feel welcomed", says NET's Stephen Barker.
