nottm is not such a bad place as people make out it is.its great for
a good night out and is wicked for shoppin. yes there is alot of crime
but i think if there was more police and betta facilities the streets
would b alot cleaner, and not full of drugs or violence and it might
not be perfect but nowere is.

05-March-2003 Nottingham Disappointments
I was born and raised in Nottingham, moved to the USA 20 years ago,
came back to visit my mother in Nottingham two years ago, and I must
say that I was horrified to see how much crime there was, how some
of the really nice neighbourhoods have gone totally down hill, and
the vast numbers of unemployment. I was really upset that such a lovely
City has really gone down so badly.

04-March-2003 Good Point Sara!
In a 'just for fun' pole for the 91热爆's Comic Relief Nottingham came
near the bottom of 10 cities tested for their 鈥楽mile Factor鈥. Basically
someone walked around your city, smiled at 100 people and counted
how many smiles were returned. I don鈥檛 have the pole in front of me
but from memory you guys in Nottingham only smiled back a really pants
18 times out of 100!!!!!!! That put you 7th with only London (no surprise)
and Edinburgh (I think) behind you. Bristol returned over 70 smiles
per 100 and even Manchester, I鈥檓 proud to say, returned over 50%.
Cheer up guys! (If I鈥檝e got the figures wrong please let me know).

Generally i like living in Nottinham but the police force seems so
sparse and under funded that there are parts of the city which could
be considered completely lawless.a new approach must be adopted if
things are to improve. The threat of violence is far too great and
having recently spent a weekend in the city i saw far more crime related
activity and felt a alot more threatened than six months in north
london.are there any initiatives to improve the rapidly deteriorating
areas.I live in West Bridgford where there is very little internal
crime however the area is now being targeted from the outside through
burglaries. It really doesn t matter whether we live in the city of
nottingham or in the county.75% of west bridgford people work in the
city using the facilities of the city not just that of the county
so they have a fair right to comment. i say that i live in Nottingham
not Nottinghamshire as that is being far too pedantic.

27-February-2003 Nottingham general
I used to live in Nottm, but moved to Edinburgh almost a year ago
with my job. I was born and bred in Nottingham and didn't have anything
to say about the placce either way, as it was somewhere I had always
lived. But in the few years before I moved, I had a lot of trouble
where I lived - I lived in Wilford Village (Nottm City boundaries)
and it used to have a good reputation, and for 7 years we had no problems.
But the last few years saw a lot of mindless burglaries (most people
down our road were burgled), burnt out cars left for weeks on my road,
joyriding late at night down the dirt road at the back of our old
house, constant graffiti on the houses down Main Road, Wilford Village,
gangs and yobs hanging outside the house opposite (dealing drugs,
spitting and smoking). I kid you not - this area had gone down hill
rapidly in just a few years. I was glad to get out of it, and that
was supposedly one of the nicer areas of Nottm City! I had neighbours
who had lived down th! e road since it was built (in the 1930's) who
had become unhappy and frightened to go out at night when the gangs
were out. Kids came over the old Toll Bridge from the Meadows and
caused trouble. It got so bad that whenever any of my family came
to visit, they were worried about leaving their cars outside the house.
I stopped going into the City centre years before as I hated the beggars,
dirt, pigeon crap and rubbish shops! (I used to go to Meadowhall rather
than go to Nottm City Centre) I can honestly say that since moving
Up North, it was the best move I ever made, and I have seen things
in a different light. I am not saying that it is all good in Edinburgh,
as it too has it's good and bad areas, but nothing like the crime
statistics of Nottingham. Up here we have 24 hour shopping almost
everywhere, good roads and a beautiful city. And the scenery up here
is wonderful. What have you got in Nottinghamshire apart from flat
fields and gridlocked roads? Even Edinburgh C! ity Bypass isn't as
bad as driving on the A52 in the rush hour! My advice to anyone is
don't be afraid to move out as it might be the best thing you ever
did! Some of my family are moving up North now, and they can't wait
to get out of Nottingham!

27-February-2003 england in general
I have lived around the world, and I must say, no place has ever compared
to England, where else in the world can you get that unique sense
of culture? Its like a small community of millions of different people
who are free to share and merge all our styles into one. We're free
to hate the monarchs and yet love what we've gotten from them. The
countryside is beautiful, the people are also beautiful, and different,
everythings varied, nothing is ever the same, I embrace that, as an
art student I find England one of the most ideal places to live. ahem,
but enough hippiness from me, all this fuss over the ideal CITY is
beyond me, create the society yourself, pass a smile every now and
then, share a friendly conversation and show people that you're not
just an arrogrant prick with an unfufilling lifestyle. People in general
is what creates the community, not the crappy foundations.

26-February-2003
My previous postings on this formum I have usually defended Nottingham,
but I am now beggining to question whether it has been right to do
so. I live in West Bridgford, which is an affluent part of Nottingham,
where recently things have got alot nicer, with small things like
a town warden and new building projects, however, Much of Nottingham
is very different to the pleasant suburbs south of the city. Crime
is high, not theft, because it isnt accurate to judge an area on levels
of theft, but violent assults etc. This seems to be quite universal
throughout Nottinghams northern districts, but also out of town estates
like clifton. The City centre of Nottingham as some wonderful architecture,
shops and bars, the skyline of Nottingham is also one of the most
plesant vistas you can see, looking from Wilford Hill. The Lace Market
is trendy and chic, the Victoria centre clean and vast, and the introduction
of trams are clearly going to bring about regeneration along its route.
The city centre, out of the many I have experianced in the UK is full
of beggars, and big issue sellers, which isnt bad, but the beggars
are offte! n abbusive and violent, and shouldnt all be disposed with.
I spent much of this last week in Edinburgh, which is one of my favourite
cities, because of its capital status you would expect a high population
of homeless, this isnt the case, I encountered only 3 big issue sellers,
who were polite, so i even bought one. The Streets were clean, litter
very low and I saw little of the dirty baggy grundgy cloathing that
is so prominant in Nottingham. When in London at Christmas I was also
supprised, the place was impecably clean, of course this was Westminster,
Chelsea, Docklands etc, so you expect this, but i again encounterd
very few beggars, considering Londons size and status. I felt safe
to let my 17 year old go out, where when he does in Nottingham i often
worry, as you do. This was also teh case when in Edinburgh. I think
Nottingham is fine if you have the wealth to live in a pleasant part,
such as the Park, which for me would be my favourite place to live
with elegant roads and panoramic views of Castle Rock, Nottingham
however is a city of Contasts, like many. Its problems would be solved
with some investement, and a right wing police/security force to hold
order. Maybe at hit first ask questions later policy would be better,
it must be more effective than the citys current force. I normally
get critised about Spelling, so I do apologise for any of you who
feel the need to comment upon this.

25-February-2003 Nottingham
Sorry the following places are not in the City of Nottingham: West
Bridgeford, Arnold, Carlton, Bramcote, Ruddington, Nuthall, Gedling,
Beeston and Chilwell. The residents do not pay Council Tax to the
City Council to keep the services of the City going. Therefore they
cannot be used as examples of good places to live in the CITY of Nottingham.
If Nottingham is so good why have the residents of these places campaigned
to resist going into the CITY of Nottingham? However, when the threat
passes they then are happy to pretend they are from Nottingham!

25-February-2003 Is Nottingham the best city in the country ?
Nottingham has the pottential to be one of the better citys in the
UK, but whoever is in control is making a mess of it. The city centre
is ok, but seems to have a vagrant problem only bettered by London
and the surrounding suburbs are mainly turning into ghettos. I Live
in Lenton with a massive student population, yet its still not very
welcoming with groups of scally kids hanging around looking for trouble
and chanting "we are the Taleban". How is that for an integrated multi-cultural
city. Also, the crime rate for such relatively small city is rediculous.
On a positive point the older generation of the city are very friendly.
On the whole Nottingham only seems to be getting worse.

20-February-2003 Is Nottingham the best city in the country ?
...Nottingham is one of the UK's most crime ridden cities. It has
far more deprivation than Leeds. Leeds is actually one of the least
deprived cities in the UK. In terms of Leeds being backward, it's
hardly that when it is in fact officially the UK's fastest growing
city. It's the UK's 3rd best shopping destination, above Nottingham.
It's a major financial centre. Nottingham is full of deprived council
estates - Bestwood, Bilborough, Broxtowe, Clifton to name four. So,
there you have it Jim, the truth. Oh, and before you come on here
telling me I don't know what I'm talking about - I used to live in
Chilwell!

believe it or not worse than any other city{check bbc site }and hackney

20-February-2003 Is Nottingham the best city in the country ?
Nottingham better than Leeds? Don't make me laugh! Let me tell you
about Nottingham. It is the 3rd most violent city in the country after
London and Manchester, it is among the poorest with high unemployment
and dreadful social problems, not to mention the worst schools in
the country. I used to live in Nottingham and hated the place. The
people are extremely unfriendly and most of the city is horrid. It
has the most nightmarish council estates I have ever seen, i.e The
Meadows!! This has to the dumbest message on here yet. Nottingham
frankly terrifies me, the place is awash with gangs and guns. Scary
place! Even the Nottinghamshire countryside is vile, Leeds is about
10 billion times better.

Jim, what planet are you on? Did you not see that humiliating TV programme

(Remember it's only a small city) Leeds, a dump? backward? guh? Leeds

Jim, your random comments are laughable and almost beyond the point
of comment...Nottingham has one of the highest crime rates among British
cities and has far less inward investment than Leeds. Sounds to me
like you are a teenager who has never even actually been to Leeds,
midduck. Ethnic minorities don't necessarily mean a more diverse culture
either, and what about "white" communities of non-british origin such
as Italian, Polish, Irish, Spanish etc. The comment "Nottingham is
more modern than London" only goes to demonstrate your ignorance and
highlight that you're talking a load of rubbish!

OK mate, each to their own, but I bet you lived there as a student.
Some aspects of Liverpool are good, but generally it's a pretty dismal
city. Fair enough, there's a lot of investment there right now to
make it a better city, but unfortunately it has a reputation nationally
for being pretty rough, and having lived there, I can see why. I know
Nottingham is quite a violent place these days, but at least cosmetically
it looks better.

20-February-2003 To Mark from Newcastle
Yes, you are right. It is the minority spoiling it for the majority.
However, the majority have to take some of the blame. If we all want
Nottingham to be better, then why don't we insist that this disruptive
minority change their attitudes and behaviour. If they are a minority,
then don't we have the power of numbers over them? Or am I too naive
for words?! Or is it merely a lack of political will in the City Council?

20-February-2003 Nottingham
A mate from Bramcote told me that Nottingham was originally called
'Snottingham' - I checked this out and it's true! I used to visit
it from time to time when I lived in the East Mids. and it does seem
to have declined a bit. I live in Birmingham now, and most of the
adverse comments I've read on here could apply equally well to Brum:
mainstream pubs full of drunks, and unfriendly people, drugs culture
etc. If you want to live in a great place then you've got to find
a way to make it better in some small way - Try smiling at someone
and starting a conversation: they might mistake you for a mugger,
but that's their problem! Most cities these days seem full of confused
and alienated people, and you don't really get a 'community feeling'
from being in a pub any more.

19-February-2003 NOTTINGHAM
It all depends on what we are compared to. For our size and location
the facilities are excellent. The atmosphere is however not so. I would
sooner live in a safe city than a trendy one.perhaps it has something
to do with the endless promenades of bars on every single thoroughfare
in the city centre.entertainment and leisure facilioties are without
a adoubt fantastic; providing you take out the people in them!!!!!!!!!!!
does anyone agree with me that the city is great except the minority-because
it is the minority ruining it for the rest of us. do you think it
has something to do with the fact nottingham people are reported as
having no sense of regional definition in that we are not north or

Max, I wouldn't go as far as saying that Chapeltown (Leeds) is like
Kensington (I wish!) compared to St.Ann's, but I see your point. However,
Leeds and Nottingham in a lot of ways are pretty similiar. A lot of
the points raised in this debate are typical of most UK cities. Beggars,
crime, litter, poverty, etc. These are the bad points, but look at
the good points. Nottingham and Leeds are the UK's fastest growing
cities. They've both had a lot of investment in recent years, and
are both building new tram systems, which will increase the prosperity
of the place (like Manchester). I know that Nottingham's crime is
bad, and as Max says, it's generally within the city boundaries, rather
than outlying suburbs, but all the inner city areas and the large
council estates are in the City of Nottingham. Crime will be generally
less in wealthier areas. I wouldn't say that Nottingham is the best
city, but it's certainly not the worst. Try living in Liverpool as
I did, it's disgusting!

first things first saying that nottingham is a big city is a cmplet
joke.its population like most cities to be far has decreased.it is
around the 270000 area in population.nottingham is great if you live
in chilwell and bramcote and all the other suburbs but to tell you
the truth the actual city is damn right grim.looking at marks point
of viw if you compare nottingham to leicester and drby even max the
anti nottingham admits they are dumps without the nottingham crime
rates.althogh nottingham poorer than derby and leicester it has got
a much better city centre so nottingham does not have much competion

18-February-2003 Is Nottingham the Best?!
I moved to Nottingham after living in countless other places in the
world, and i have to say, I am disappointed. Over the three years
I have been here the crime has got considerably worse, the number
of beggars and Big Issue sellers has skyrocketed, and I just don't
feel safe here anymore. I used to feel that Nottingham was a city
with a human dimension. People would be willing to help you out if
you looked lost and they would talk to you on the bus. Now, they ignore
you, wouldn't spit on you if you were on fire, and if you speak to
them, they think you are going to mug them or something. I have moved
out of Nottingham and further to the North, but i still work here.
The traffic problems are a ngihtmare - you just can't go anywhere
without grinding to a halt in some elongated traffic jam. It makes
life simply miserable! I have to say, you will not find me walking
about town in the dark, and certainly not alone at any time. Nottingham
is not the "world's best city". It is the world's okay-for-the moment
city" instead.

No, not by a long, long way. We have spiralling crime, filthy streets,
no-go areas, ineffective public transport and an apathetic populace.
I've lived in Nottinghamshire all my life but now only visit the city
perhaps once a year. It's truely an embarressment. Luckily when I

would spend a lot of time apologising for this grotty and dangerous

I was born and bred in nottm. I have worked all my life in nottm. The
city used to be a very nice place until the bad attitude of outsiders
came in and spoiled what the city once had. You didnt have to worry
about walking in the city without being accosted by so many beggars
and people who dont(not cant but wont) work for a living.I used to
love going into the city to shop but now i fear the city has gone
downhill fast and until they bring some sort of law to stop these
beggars then i dont think that nottingham will get back to the lovely
clean city it was.The market square is a dumping ground for these
so called unemployed, you cant sit down in your lunch break and enjoy
peace and quiet for dogs running around . for every big issue seller
they have two or three dogs each. The so called benches that are in
the square are either broken or covered in pigeon crap, and the market
square is the first place that visitors from other parts of the world
seem to ask for.What a greeting e! h!!!

Paul, when people joke about 'your lot' it's unjustified. Stealing
car radios? No, that's not fair! Dropping lots of litter, spitting
on trains, covering railway stations in graffiti, trying to jump on
moving trains... that's more like it. That's what I saw on Saturday
on a train journey from Crosby into Liverpool city centre. Of course,
these are all fairly minor compared to the shootings that go on here,
the gang crime, and the rest. Nottingham isn't perfect, but it's better
than Liverpool.

im a student here originally from liverpool. When people here where

So what should i say if someone says they are from nottingham..? Should
i ask them if start fights every weekend? Should i joke about their
horrible misplaced accent? It doesn't matter how much you regenerate
a city..its the inhabitants that really make it what it is. Students
get a bad reputation for being pissed, making noise mand stealing
signs..but they don't shoot strangers, stamp on old womens heads or
break into cars! The older generation of this city(30+)are generally
nice people but god help the place when the young people grow up,
especially these wannabe gangsters that cruise round in their yellow

18-February-2003 Nottingham City
Nottingham was a great city in the 1950's 60's. Now it is just a complete
mess of a place. For instance, you cannot walk with any safety within
Nottingham on the pavements as you are continually faced with road
works or being approached by beggers - and to live within the city
it now costs an unwarranted arm and a leg in rates. The city will
become even more dangerous to people with the introduction of "trains"
on the cities roads

You see Mark it's exactly your attitude that has left Nottingham in
the sad state it is in today. I accept that the shopping is OK here,
if you like the skin tight apparently trendy look, and the night life
is OK if you like the whole main stream thing. That's not the issue
though. The point is that some people here have this strange idea
that Nottingham is some big city like London or Birmingham, it's not!
It has a population of 250,000, but the violent crime rate of London
or Birmingham, and that's just it. The problems come from this mentality,
small time criminals trying to pretend they're in a big city. Oh and
by the way, Swindon isn't a metropolis it has a population of just
under 200,000 and doesn't pretend to be anything else, note the almost
complete lack of crime there!

COULD YOU PEOPLE STOP BAD MOUTHING OUR CITIES. FROM MY EXPERIENCE
I HAVE NEVER BEEN TO ONE BRITISH CITY WHO GIVES ANY ONE THE RIGHT
TO BE SO ARROGANT.AFTER ALL, ALL YOU DO IS LIVE THERE .YOU DID NOT

GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO BE SO ARROGANT. IF I WANTED TO MOVE TO ONE

15-February-2003 Nottingham city centre
Nottm is a great place to live, work, enjoy life and settle down. Lets
face it, how many other cities can boast of the following 1.Two football
clubs 2.Holme pierrpont 3.National Ice Centre 4.Three theatres 5.Universities.
6.Two brilliant hospitals 7.Local International airport 8.21st century
tram system 9.River Trent 10.Nottingham castle 11.Two indoor shopping
centres 12.A known fashion capital 13.Massive entertainment 14.More
pubs and clubs than you can shake a stick at. The list goes on. Who
wouldnt want to live in Nottingham. All i ask is that the rabble who
every friday and saturday nights who leave the comfortable surrounds
of their own towns many miles away, jump into a privatly hired mini
bus, come into the fair city of Nottingham, get drunk, cause a nuisance, break
a few windows, fight other out of town mini bus drunkards, throw up
all over OUR streets, urinate in shop doorways STAY THERE IN YOUR
NICE QUIET TOWNS. The people of Nottingham dont want you to visit
when all you do is make a mess for us locals to have to clear up.

14-February-2003 Nottingham Love it/ Loathe it
Hayley of Gillingham , Kent You ask for opinions and views of The
City of Nottingham. When you have moved here Nottingham will become
home to you. Whether that be for a number of days, or weeks. You`ve
probably heard the expression "home is what you make it", well it
applies to the area that you move to, village, town, city. There are
folk who live here , or have done, who despise the place for whatever
reason. However on the positive side there are others who will say
its a great place to live. We have crime, drugs, prostitution, but
then their are other places in Britain who face similar problems.
We try to tackle these with resources and finances available. My wife
and myself were married in Nottingham centre and we`ve lived here
for for 32 years. The only negative we have noticed about this wonderful
city .......is the amount of traffic. There again what location in
Britain does not have large traffic problems. In conclusion Hayley
we say , don`t be influenced by anybody`s opinions or views. You have
to make the decision yourself.

14-February-2003 my home town
as a teenager living in skegness but with fond memories of my home
town nottingham from being a young'un and being a regular visitor
of family still there and being a season ticket holder at my beloved
nottingham forest I obviously have a basis for comparison between
to differently perceived places. To be quite honest I cant wait to
move back to nottingham as skegness being highly regarded as a plaesant
seaside town is going down the same road in crime as nottingham and
maybe not in gun crime and major roberies and drugs but in every day
robberies that you would need to worry about more I can hardly see
the differnce when talking to family in nottingham who have never
been robbed after 60 years in nottingham. One thing I am sure of is
that apart from the extreme people in nottingham especialy in my age
group people are much more freindly and less fake which is my main
preference to nottingham. The oportunities and social life holds much
more to offer which cant be diputed .One thing that can be said is
that if you dont agree with me I will find out for myself and I will
have a much more accurate account of nottingham but for now I WILL
carry on working hard in my education so I can move back to nottingham
till then c'mon u reeeeds!

14-February-2003 Reply to Hayley
Hayley, despite all the negative comments about the place, it's generally
pretty good. Like all cities, Nottingham has it's crime, poverty and
other problems, but you could do far worse. It's by far the nicest
city in the Midlands. Although I live back in my native north, I lived
there for a few years, in an area called Chilwell to the west of the
city. It's quite nice, with the exception of an estate called Inham
Nook. Other areas like Arnold, Beeston, Bramcote, Mapperley, West
Bridgford and Wollaton are your best bets. Avoid places like Bestwood,
Bulwell, and most inner city areas. Nottingham does have a lot of
council estates, most of which are pretty dodgy, but it does also
have nice areas, most of which are not actually in the City of Nottingham,
but in surrounding boroughs which many of it's suburbs are situated.
Hope you enjoy the city - I did.

14-February-2003 Nottingham
Being a student in Nottingham is from my experience brilliant. The
night life is great, you meet people from all over the world and there
is always things to do. Nottingham is a living town with pulse. But
what I noticed and was concerned about while living in Nottingham
was three things in particular. 1. The homeless people ( including
all the sellers of The Issue) 2. The lack of knowledge in enviromental
issues. 3. The high rate of crimes. Even if these are difficult issues
to deal with-something has to be done. Because these issues affects
all of us. And we all have a responsability to make a change. Composting
is a beginning, if you are not in to it yet. But on the whole, Nottingham
is a town I cannot live without.

13-February-2003 Nottingham - Best city - Not any more!!
I moved to Nottingham some six years ago to study and liked the city
so much I decided to stay and work here. Like any city it has both
its good points and bad points. House rent prices are cheap and the
pubs, clubs and restaurants in the city are superb. The only problem
with the city is its slow decline into anarchy. I've had the pleasure
of living here whilst it was still quite a pleasant city to walk around
in which is why I feel its such a shame to have let it get this bad.
The local councils benefit system is seen as one of the easiest to
cheat in the country and so theres been a huge influx of homeless
and immigrant communities. If you walk through the city centre on
any normal day you can guarantee that you'll be asked for your hard
earned wages at least five times by the homeless. Add this to the
huge number of big issue sellers then you get a very frustrating city
to work in. I also feel that there has been an explosion in certain
communities that is strangling the! city. Crime has risen massively
whatever people say and I believe that there is a blinkered view from
a lot of people on this issue. If you don't look then you won't see.
I'm not saying its bad to live here, more that I agree with steve
of Notts who said the city is being killed. There's been to much focus
on making the city cool to live in (trams, clubs etc) and not enough
on making it safe, clean and most importantly respectable to work
in. The tram system simply isn't needed and has caused massive carnage
and will continue to do so (if it ever works because they made the
trams to heavy to get up hills). The way the city is going in five
years time it cetainly won't be worth living in. If you are moving
here then look at the Park, Mapperly Park, Wollaton or Sherwood for
close to the city or live in a village a little bit out of the city.

10-February-2003 91热爆 less people and agression
i know that for most of them it is not there fault that they are homeless.
But i was out on Friday and one homeless person asked me for 5 pounds,
and i said no sorry. She started and started to threaten me and was
getting all up tight in my face. I think that there should be a ban
on this sort of behaviour and i think that something should be done
about agressive homeless people. I do give the bit odd change now
again. But i think that 5 pounds is a lot to ask for, and there is
never any police around or not enough police around in the Nottingham
areas on a Friday and Saturday nights.

Paddy, what stereotypes? Typical London attitude. Listen Delboy, why
don't you look on a map, look north of the M25 (that's up the map)
and see where these 'provincial backwaters' are, then get in your
car and drive up this road called the M1. No, it's not a dirt track,
but a major motorway, and along with other equally major motorways,
it links all these stereotyped cities. Best you wrap up warm though
as it's cold up north. Oh, I'd bring a torch too as we've not got
to grips with electricity yet. I hope you're not too shocked by our
northern poverty by the way. Also, best keep it to yourself if you
plan to come up north as your fellow Londoners may question you as
to why you'd want to do such a thing! "Go up north, what, with northern
people? Pleassssse, why on earth would you want to do that? They are
so uncultured and crude up north, oh, and they speak in such common
accents too. No, you can't possibly want to go up north. What are
you thinking of?" I can just hear the c! onversation now, down the
Nags Head, with your pint of London Pride and your jellied eels! STEREOTYPES??
You insular lot down the BOTTOM end of the M1 are the biggest stereotyped
people around!

31-January-2003 Re. Old glory days of Forest & the city
Don't think u can really call Nottingham a major city, it's moe of
a large town with the crime of a large city! The night life is good
for a place of its size though, only problem with it is the bouncer's
trying to sell you coke all the time and the crazy drinks prices :-s
Oh well, wouldn't put anyone off moving here, just make sure you know
the areas to stay away from and don't walk around on our own at night.
Good to see the police making an effort at the new "high visability"
policing by keeping warm in their cars wathching all the cold shoppers
from a distance!

29-January-2003 Old glory days of Forest & the city
I still find myself saying 'back to back European champs' when the
Man U. 'band waggoners'(glory chasers) here in T.O. get on the nerves.
It was a great time growing up in that very successful Cloughie regime,
especially from about the late 70's to the early 80's. Actually if
you were a sports fan in general a lot of city pride was felt as the
cricket team was not that bad either with the likes of Hadlee, Randall
etc... Having moved away 16 years ago and visiting every few years
since 'the grass is greener on the other side' scenario is wearing
off. The City in general is a classy one, with a rich social/night
life equal to that of the major cities around the world. People are
genuinely warmer than North Americans but then again there seems to
be a lot more narrow minded idiots around too. Nottingham will always
be special as it is a part of my being, but the general socio-eco
conditions compared to where I am now make it a place I will continue
to visit on holiday only (keep it real). A big up to the family there
and of course the beer !!

Dave, like you I'm immensely proud of where I come from. When somebody
comes on a talk forum and slags your area off, naturally you're going
to defend it. OK, if you were just having a laugh then fair enough,
but Yorkshire is my home and where I was born. I lived in Nottingham
for 2 very happy years, and many people have come on this site saying
it's becoming run down, etc. Compared to most other cities, Nottingham
and Leeds are very nice, and the two cities are very similar. Econimically
they are both in the top 5 successful cities, tram systems are being
built in both cities which will only help to boost the economy (if
managed properly) and appearance of the cities is better than most
in the UK. The problems however that both Leeds and Nottingham face
is rising crime, particularly gun related, which is becoming increasingly
worrying. Yorkshire is home and yes, some people like to stereotype
here and everywhere else, but things are changing and up here it's
fast. Anyway, I! 'l! l have to dash as I've got to clear the coal

23-January-2003 Nottingham in general
I have lived in Nottingham all my life and believe it to be a great
city. I find it interesting how people keep quoting statistics about
how bad Nottingham is for crime. Statistics can be used to prove anything
and I feel that opinions should be based on personal experience and
not figures. I work in St. Annes (arguably one of the roughest areas
of the city), and have never witnessed any crime. This also goes for
the nightlife in Nottingham, you do not need a bodyguard when you
go out as some people have previously stated. If you go out to have
a good time you will get it in Nottingham, there are good bars, shops,
pubs and restaurants. So ignore people who quote facts and figures
and try the city out for yourself - i promise you'll love it!

just not funny! I don't want to bore you with facts about my supposedly
'bleak' part of Yorkshire, as I fear it may be too much for someone
as dim as you to take in, but Leeds is one of the most successful

ANYTHING about Yorkshire, because if you did, you would know that
I would need to go up to the Dales to count sheep, and not at the

23-January-2003 Nottingham - fab place!
As a student in my second year at Trent, I have to say that I love
Nottingham! I don't live in a central location, so I get the best
of both worlds. As for the crime, it is the same in any city. Although
Nottingham is suffering from the nationwide rise in gun culture. Coming
from near Milton Keynes, a town devoid of personality, Nottingham
seems a great place to me. Those who describe it as a dull slum just
aren't looking hard enough. The culture is diverse, the nightlife
fabulous, there are so many things to do and places to eat, and so
much heritage! I am fascinated by the history of Nottingham, and it
is a wonderful place to spend the summer.

23-January-2003 Notts best City etc.......
I have lived in Nottingham all my life and as soon as I was old enough
and wise enough to get out...I DID! However, being absent from Nottingham
has made me aware of its positives. Nottingham has a great nightlife
- (as long as you have a personal bodyguard)and its historical character
is great too. I would advise everyone to visit Nottingham at least
once in there life time, but i certainly wouldnt encourage anyone
to stay longer than a few years. There are some great places, but
i think overall, these are outweighed by the 'not so great'places.
Personally, Nottingham will always have a place in my sense of who
I am and where I come from - and I am proud to tell people, but it
is not somewhere I want to be in the future.

22-January-2003 Notts
I have been a student in Nottingham for around 18 months and believe
that there is currently a serious problem with crime. Toward the tale
end of last year there were bank robberies and several shootings including
a young woman shot in the head at point blank range. All of this helped
propel Nottingham up to 4th position on the list of most dangerous
places to be in the early hours of the morning. However despite the
myriad of problems with Nottingham there are still so many positives.
Due to the (circa) 40,000 students from the two Universities Nottingham
is a vibrant youthful city with great nightlife and great restaurants
and a wealth of cultural history. It is common knowledge that one
has to take greater care regarding valuables when in large cities
and Nottingham by no means stands out from other cities in this respect.
It is unfortunate that one has to accept that along with the wonderful
diversity that emerges from our cosmopolitan cultural capitals there
will always be an undesirable criminal element that lurks beneath
the surface.

21-January-2003 What about Racial Tension in Nottingham?
Hi, without sounding like a cynical person, I know that Nottingham
is a racially diverse city, and since I am thinking of moving there
(never been before) can anyone comment on whether there is much racial
tension that you here so much of in Midlands / Northern English cities?
I know it's not an Oldham (without stereotyping any place), but is

for an ethnic minority to live and work? Opinions welcome!

I am from Notts but now live in Northampton. Nottingham has a great
nightlife but some really rough areas to watch out for. To the person
who asked what is wrong with Bestwood, I give you one piece of advice,
do not move there. It has the highest rate of young single mothers,
drug pushers and youth gangs in the city, except for St Anns. Its
a complete dump. I truly advise you to stay well away if you want
to keep your possesions. Nottingham itself is a nice city though with
some nice areas sucg as Burton Joyce and Mapperly park, the nightlife
is great but there are some rough places to look out for, sunday nights
is grab a granny night and full of older rough women in leather. I
moved away from Notts and I have to say I'm glad I did. Nice place

I lived in Notts for about ten years or so, and all I can say is that
it is a city I shall never return to. All the comments about crime
is bad, but just ignore it are a little silly, I think. Kinda hard
to work for a living and then just ignore your stuff being stolen,
or having your car windows smashed in on numerous occasions, like
mine. It really was a microcosm of the UK, and all in all I have no
desire to ever step foot on English soil again. Too many snobs, too
much crime, too little to offer.

My partner and I lived in Notts for 8 months. It was most lovely.
I miss the long days of summer walking to the local for a pint. Radio
stations were wicked. It's a city of a slower pace. There is crime
to watch out for, but we should watch our backs in any town. Believing
that your safe because you're not in Notts is ignorant. The lot I
know in England are a fine bunch. The economy was rough but I believe

18-January-2003 Nottingham
I visit Nottingham from time to time visiting friends and have mixed
feelings. The reason I don鈥檛 like Nottingham is that I mostly visit
during university term time. On the odd occasion that I鈥檝e been there
during the summer it鈥檚 a completely different place and I do enjoy
it a lot more. I study in Manchester and I must say the student population
makes this place an exciting place to live, 60 000 students in an
up and coming city like this is great fun. When you go to Nottingham
though it鈥檚 completely spoilt by arrogant 鈥淚鈥檓 from Nottingham uni,
not Trent!鈥 Oxford and Cambridge rejects. (plus my ex-girlfriend went
off with a guy from Nottingham uni). To say anywhere is better than
anywhere else though is stupid. Manchester may be great fun but I
went for a walk last night and every car window down one street had
been put through! Fact is I鈥檇 prefer Britain to be better than anywhere
else and so we shouldn鈥檛 be comparing English cites with English cities
but with their European equivalents. No matter how good Nottingham,
Manchester or anywhere else is there鈥檚 no place like home, Doncaster
;) Don鈥檛 ask me why I was on this web site and why I bothered to comment
because I don鈥檛 know. Take anything I've said with a pinch of salt
it's just a bit of fun. Nottingham, I'm sure, is a great place to
live, i hust haven't lived there yet.

17-January-2003 People's attitudes and opinions regarding Nottingham
Love the comments! Sounds like many of you completely miss the point.
A city is not just the bit with a concrete square and town hall in
front. Places like Bulwell and hucknall are important because of what
they contributed to the development of Nottingham through the supply
of workers to the industry surrounding the city. Use of "minging"
shows the lack of maturity in expressing a view on what is a very
beautiful city and surrounding area. Nottingham is great, it is just
there is a certain amount of 'idiots' in the city and they tend to
use this site to depict a city that is intolerant and not welcoming.
I'd gladly pay the train fare to punch a bit of reality into some
people's brains that use this site! Thanks.

Nottingham is a great city with lots of great facilities but it is
by no means the best it is beaten hands down by London and Manchester
as are all other cities whether it be Leeds, Birmingham or Edinburgh.
In terms of culture, media, finance, nightlife, shopping, international
profile, city developments, and government and private investment
London and Manchester leave the other cities to eat the crumbs from

Currently live on campus at Nottingham Uni (not Trent). Looking for

My main advice to all of you thinking of moving to Nottingham is DON'T!!!
The city is in serious decline. It is the only place I've ever been
in the UK where you can go into the city (if its big enough to be
called that) anyway week day and find no-one has a job, just thousands
of denim clad townies spending their benefits. The cty seems to have
more no-go areas than safe areas. In reality Nottingham is a large
town with the crime rate of a metropolis and nothing really going
for it. As for the night life, the supposedly "classy" bars of The
Lace Market of full of Nottingham's finest townies showing off their
best Ben Sherman. The student scene seems to be as good as it gets
here :s I've lived in Coventry, Edinburgh, London and Swindon and
out of all of these places would have to recommend Swindon the most
and Nottingham the least. I came to Nottingham with high expectations
but really can't find one thing to tell people that is good about
it! Sorry :(

14-January-2003 Nottingham yet again!
Have to say i was really interesed in everyones opinions regarding
this! I know some people may of been a but offended about my last
comments but that was not my direct intention!!! The thing with areas
in Nottingham is It varies from one street to the next its very strange
and is quite clear its usually based on the tenants of the properties!
Mud sticks thats all ill say no matter what you say. Regarding GAY
life Nottingham is good there options of different pubs and there
is a club which isnt bad but in fairness hockley now is rather trendy
and thers alot of places you can go and theres the odd poof prancing
around in lovezoo wearing shades and prada! regardless! All in all
i do like Nottingham the poeple genrally are ok, main thing to say
is just look after yourself! XXXXXXX

well said mark.what is that idiot dave on about.i know you found nottingham
decent mark but fair enough as thats your opinion but to say its the
best in the country dave is beyond ajoke. in my opinion it has to
be edinborough for its shear history and as for nottingham castle
that s a complete joke.nottingham has got much more drab areas than
leeds like bulwell and bestwood people dont see those areas because
there hidden away.oh HARSHAD I RECCOMEND WOLLATON AS ITS THE BEST

14-January-2003 Reply to Dave the regional racist!
Dave, are you actually being serious in that narrow minded run down
of just about anywhere outside Nottingham? Having lived around the
country, including Nottingham, and being from West Yorkshire, I first
found your comments offensive. Having thought about it, they are just
laughable. Fair enough, place names like Goole, Pontefract and Huddersfield
do sound drab. Let's look more locally to Notts(e.g. Killisick, Skegby,
Blidworth, Warsop, Hucknall.... etc, etc). Not exactly idyllic are
they? As for Leeds being a refuse tip, which Leeds have YOU been to?
Leeds is actually cleaner than most other UK cities, and as for poverty,
Nottingham ranks far higher on the deprivation scale than both Leeds
and Bradford. Londoners think they're gods gift do they? The Welsh
are ignorant? Glaswegians are junkies? Going by your method of regional
analysis, Nottingham people are thick. Of course that's not true,
but most people have a different outlook to the outside world than
you apparently d! o. Do us all a favour, grow up!

Nottingham is a good city apart from crime but i learn to ignore it.there
are some horrible places in nottingham but i feels its a good city
to be in and i also agree with richmond there are some minging places
but the town center is really nice but i feel Nottingham is getting
a bad reputation for crime but ignoring that its a really good city:)

12-January-2003 "Nottingham the thriving city"!
As a previous worker on the front line of a benefits agency office,
I have heard numerous times first hand that "crack" is cheaper than
almost anywhere else in the country, hence causing beggars, etc to
flock to Nottingham from other cities. This causes Nottingham to now
be riddled with more beggars every few yards than most places in the
UK. The cheap price also contributes to the high crime rate in the
city. If this is "thriving"then give me a run-down city any day!

12-January-2003 Leicester not much different?!
I moved from Ruddington to Leicester 5 years ago and i've never settled
in. Leicester is just a dull generic British city. Theres nothing
*wrong* with it as such, theres just nothing to make it stand out.
Nottingham seems to have avoided the 'generic curse', and I'm not
entirely sure how.

12-January-2003 Nottingham ...best city
Nottingham is by far the best place on the planet.....Lets start with
Birmingham apart from the stupid accent, the city is dull as dishwater, even
on a bright summers day!!!and full of Brummies.. Derby has got about
as much character as a funeral procession... Leicester..is slightly
better and you can get a good curry there but the city centre is pretty
naff. Lets talk about Wales...for a start its full of Welsh people
they are very hostile towards english and will start talking in there
stupid language if you walk into a shop or pub etc,it always rains
there.....i think the sheep are more freindly!!(i dont get to freindly
with them i must emphasise) THE SHEEP THAT IS!!!! As for Yorkshire....why
do all the city/town names sound so drab..eg.GOOLE,PONTEFRACT,HUDDERSFIELD,DRONEFIELD
WAKEFIELD LEEDS??Bradford and Leeds are complete refuse tips, and smell
like them as well. The best thing to come out of Sheffield is the M1!!.
ALL Londoners think there gods gift.. and that silly rhyming slang...There
roads are crap and there driving is even worse, basically its full
of patronising gits who drive round in flash motors and talk crap.
The North East...well thats grim its cold and very uninviting and
as for that silly angel of the north, what a waste of money...A rusty
pile of junk that would look better in the scrap yard...I think an
old mark 1 cortina would do a better job. Scotland.....Full of plonkers
wearing silly skirts with no underwear on...and when the wind blows
only revealing a small tadger...Then there is Glasgow its cold grim
and full of junkies and beer guts. I must say i like the South west
apart from Bristol..its to near Wales and its full of scumpy slurpers(note
wrong with that!!!)there accent is a tad daft..ooaaarrr and the M5
is a total nightmare. Devon and Cornwall are great but its not up
to the great city of Nottingham...why is it you are always glad to
get back home?? Every part of Nottingham is sound...people slag off
the Meadows and st annes but ive been there and let me tell you its
only a very small minority that give it a reputation. IVE LIVED IN
NOTTS ALL MY LIFE AND WOULDNT BE ANY WHERE ELSE.....I LOVE IT
Dave.., |

12-January-2003 The Best City
I have lived in Nottingham all my life (so far !). Nottingham used
to be a fantastic city but over the last decade it has changed drastically.
Nottingham has 2 average shopping centres and a diverse collection
of shops between them, but getting into the city centre now is becoming
impossible. 24 hour bus lanes that force cars into one long queue
crawling into town, car parks that are full from very early in the
morning meaning more queueing, and traffic wardens ready to pounce
at the fist sign of a ticket ! And before you all say 'get the bus',
if they provided a bus service that let me put a dozen large bags
somewhere safely, I just might. Once you do get into the shops the
attitudes of the shop assistants are appalling. Its a case of "give
me the money, now clear off". Oh - and that is if you actually do
find a shop worth going into. Most shops that open now tend to be
either ) a pub, b) a new club or c) a coffee shop !!! I live to the
North of the city, and now I am much happier to travel to Meadowhall
to do a large shop than battle into and through the city. It is a
lot less stressful. Maybe the council should re-title their logo "Nottingham
- we're killing our city". Something to think about.

12-January-2003 What about Gay life in Nottingham?
I am considering moving to Nottingham with my partner but would like
to ask people out there - is it true that it is a tolerant city for
gay people? does the city have much of a gay scene? Of course, all
cities have their problems, but I've heard that due to a young population
it's quite a hip place- any responses to that?

11-January-2003 Nottingham
Let me see...We don't have much competion do we? I mean what city
are we compared with? If its Derby then...well, its like comparing
Rome with Ulan Battur do i need to say more. Leicester, they are trying
but suffer from the same problem as Derby, we call it the moon problem,
atmosphereless. So yes Nottingham is the best of the bunch locally
thank god.

JP. If you're looking for the quieter life, yet easy reach down the

food. Also, bit of a community feel.

10-January-2003 In reply to JP
JP, I lived in Chilwell, which is on the west side of Nottingham.
It was a very pleasant area (apart from a nearby council estate).
Beeston is your best bet really. It's near the university, good pubs,
shops are OK, and easy to get into the city centre. Try also places
like Bramcote, Wollaton, West Bridgford, which aren't too far. Hope
you like Nottingham. I as very happy there, although there's no place
like home (Leeds).

10-January-2003 Moving to Nottingham (from London)
I've lived all over the UK, but never in the Midlands. But now I find
I'm moving up to live there in the summer! Really looking forward
to it. I'd say that Nottingham has a very positive reputation for
those of us elsewhere in the UK - and somewhere definitely 'on the
up' (like Leeds, Manchester and Cardiff). Trams should be great (not
many people in Manchester will admit to having resisted them now).
[Re: "Theres really minging areas BULLWELL STRELLEY BROXTOWE HYSON
GREEN BESTWOOD ETC but theres nice places to!"] Anybody any suggestions
about good places to look when house hunting? I'll be working at Nottingham
Uni. but will have a car and happy to travel a bit. Cheers.

10-January-2003 Players cigarettes
I have a miniature pack of Players given to me by my aunt who worked
at Players back in the 1940's. This pack is approximately 3/4" in
size and is complete with tiny wooden cigarettes. Does anyone have
any information on how old this item would be and what the value is?

08-January-2003 Hey I live in Strelley
and I love it. All the old grannies talk to me at the bus stop I chat
to people on the bus, I don't live in fear here, and I'm not benefit
scum. I consider myself very respectable, it was the only house I
could afford on my low income. I hate it when people think if you
live in the Broxtowe area you are suddenly a trouble maker. There
are a handful of families that make it a bad place to live. And at
any rate, most people live near or even next door to a criminal, even
if they don't know it.

09-January-2003 Re: Nottingham
Did you take any notice of the differences between nottingham and
the other places you lived? You say you lived in Swindon which has
one of the lowest crime rates in Europe and now you live in Nottingham
which has one of the highest? And also where is the dodgy area in
Broxtowe? Have the Bramcote millionaires turned nasty?

07-January-2003 Nottingham
Ok i can see everones point here likeanywhere else in the world there
are good and bad points! first off i used to live in leicester, swindon
and northampton and to be honest theres not much diffrence except
in pubs bad clubs etc! i mean in people and theyre attitudes! Ok yes
it is multi cultural which in fairness can be deemed good or bad depending
on what experiences you have! I live with 3 asian girls in the forest
fields area in general quiet but in most cases theres more difference
in the streets not the area! Radford RD reknown for being a bit dodgy
but Sherwood rise not too bad! Not far from each other! The city is
cool but you aint gonna get it much better anywhere else! We all have
to be more careful these days no matter what, i think most poeple
are aware guns are usually used to settle gang squabbles etc by living
here you kind of hear this! i dont live in fear im going to get gunned
down! Where i live is prodominently asain that doesnt bother me either
why should ! i'd rather be ther ethan bullwell where i have to say
is RANK! the city os nice if you just be careful apart from that dont
know if ive made a point at all! but there you go! Theres really minging
areas BULLWELL STRELLEY BROXTOWE HYSON GREEN BESTWOOD ETC but theres
nice places to! have to say though alot of residents here dont look
after theyre homes i see loads of reall beautiful house ruined by
a load of crammed immigrants or something and before you start im
not racist! anything but ! you take time to walk around and see what
you see!
Amazing! xx, Notts |

07-January-2003 Worlds Best City
I think the quality of a city is more dependdent upon the quality
of the people than on its location. For an individual the Best City
in the world is going to be where your friends and family are. I worked
in Nottingham for a while and found it a plesant city to work in,
however I prefer Adelaide South Australa because of my close conections
here. However I am sure that the reverse wiuld be true in relation
to the majority of people who live in the Nottingham area.

06-January-2003 Is Nottingham the best city?
I would just like to say that I really do like Nottingham on the whole
and some of my family have lived there for a great many years. I dont
get much chance to get up there and visit but when I do I really enjoy
being there the people are very friendly and pleasant. There are a
lot of places of interest, places to dine out and great shops too!
I must admit though that I have noticed a decline in the place and
no longer feel as safe as I used to. I noticed a lot of beggars in
the city centre whereas around 7 yrs ago I never saw any at all. Also
it is no longer safe to go into the city at night so we are no longer
able to enjoy ourselves as before.I do feel that crime has increased
and needs to be tackled. I also enjoy the multicultural identity Nottingham
has and its history. I would really like to live there in a nice area
but I cannot afford it and wouldnt hesistate to move there as there
are a lot of opportunities for people. I live in Wales so you can
imagine just how vibrant and exciting Nottingham seems to me as where
I live in Wales is just about the worst place you could live. I hate
it here - my heart is in Nottingham!

05-January-2003 Is Nottingham the best city?
This discussion is so funny. What's even more funny is the fact that
some of you even believe that Notingham is the best city. I have noticed
since I've lived here, however, that people in Nottingham seem to
have an ignorance of the rest of the country rivalled only by Londoners!
It was a good marketing ploy by GWR to use the arrogance of the locals
through Trent FM and come up with that slogan, shame they've done
the same thing in just about every city in the UK.

05-January-2003 Nottingham Castle.
Long ago in the distant past, ,many people smoked cigarettes, and
enjoyed the soothing effects of the nicotine contained in the tobacco
that burned so nicely in the cigarette. People used to call cigarettes
"Fags, and there were many brands to choose from like Wills Woodbines,
Capstan Full Strength,Craven A and many others. One of the great favourites
was a cigarette manufactured in Nottingham by John Player Company.
It was known throughout the kingdom as "Players Medium Navy Cut",
and it was a terrific "fag" to smoke. On the back of the Players cigarette
packet there was a picture of Nottingham Castle, very grand it was,
surrounded by trees and bushes. There was also supposed to be a little
dog in that picture, but one could never find him. Do any of you old
smoking codgers know where that little dog really was?
