August 2001 Manor Lodge: a ghostly walk back in time
The Lodge was designed by Robert Smythson - the architect behind many Elizabethan and Jacobean houses including Wollaton Hall and Hardwick Hall. It was given permission to be built by Henry VIII in the late 16th century.
She stayed at the lodge, not as a guest, but as a prisoner under the orders of Queen Elizabeth I. The historic pub is rumoured to be riddled with ghosts.
Since then there have been many sightings of the woman's ghost walking past the pub window. The pub's manageress, Diane Eadie, has seen several of the legendary ghosts, and felt cold drafts washing past her - she has even been woken up by a lady crying her heart out for a full five minutes. Despite the hauntings she is not frightened - she says the ghosts seem quite friendly! So whoever greets you, you're assured of warm welcome at Manor Lodge. |
