From Hell

Prepare for gore in this Jack the Ripper thriller
Going to see a film that stars Johnny Depp you expect a beautifully shot piece.

He's done it again here, even though the subject is one Jack the Ripper.

Dan Sinclair

Depp always manages to work with a good team. Just look at Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow or Chocolat.

From the opening pictures we know we're in for more of the same - as we creep into the murky world of 19th century London.

The cast is headed by leading Americans spliced with well known Brits - Robbie Coltrane, someone who used to be in Brookside, two from Playing the Field.

Surprisingly, my main gripe arises from Depp himself. He strains with a cockney accent. Being a South London boy this did grate.

However, put this to one side and you can easily get wrapped up in the story as you follow the main characters through the dark streets.

Then you'll be jolted back to present day with the clumsy script - straying from 1888 to current phraseology - is this an attempt by the Hughes brothers to remind you that you're at the flicks?

Summing up, this film is a flawed but visually enjoyable period piece.

I'm sure the male of the species will be hooked - praying a gorgeous ginger Heather Graham survives the whole two hours!

3/5
