One
Night is good but you can't help thinking it could have
been better.
It could
have been an excellent black and white 40's style Film Noir,
with a few more gags it could have been a really funny Black
Comedy, if it wanted to get seedier it could even have passed
as an Emmanuelle style soft porn picture.
As it
is, the film passes the time without ever reaching constant
peaks.
The story
revolves around Jewel (Liv Tyler), a femme fatale, who draws
Dillon, Goodman and sleazy lawyer Carl (Paul Reiser) into
her web.
Each character
recalls how they first set eyes on the temptress on that one
night at McCool's!
The promotional
material surrounding this film talks about the three men and
their different views of Tyler. The truth of the matter is
they all fancy her like mad.
This leads
to the soft porn approach especially when young Jewel starts
washing her car with her big sponge and foamy water! It's
a hot day so she needs to keep cool herself!
There's
some neat camera work and good one-liners. For example, when
Matt Dillon talks to Jewel about a murder she's just committed
he says "It's just that sex and the violence all in one
night. It's too much."
All the
leading cast put in good performances although you can't help
feeling John Goodman's operating on auto pilot.
It's worth
seeing just for Michael Douglas's dodgy hair piece and a terrific
end sequence which involves a shoot-out to the music of the
Village People.
But beware.
Try not to view the television adverts for this film. One
of the best images in the movie is given away in that thirty
seconds promo.
