It seems
years since the Karaoke craze peaked in Britain. Now, for
some reason it seems to have captured the hearts of young
Americans (or at least writer John Byrum and the Hollywood
executives who approved this picture).

The good
news for them is that one of the songs from the film ("Cruisin'",
sung by Paltrow and Lewis) is a big hit across the pond.
But the
movie itself has received less than favourable reviews.
Six strangers
share a passion for karaoke. The story follows their fortunes
as they aim to compete for the $5,000 prize in a grand final
in Omaha, Nebraska.

Sounds
promising but it's over-sentimental and horribly slow at times.
Does it
want to be a comedy, a musical or a serious drama? Gwyneth's
dad, director Bruce Paltrow, doesn't seem to know.
"Hits
mostly flat notes" is how one US critic has described
Duets. But while Gwyneth Paltrow won't have to worry
about crying at Oscar time, maybe she should save some hankies
in case she gets to collect a Grammy next year.
