After
building a steady fan base with creations like Morph and Wallace
and Gromit, Nick Park's Aardman company has taken the plunge
and moved to the big screen with instant success.
Chicken
Run follows the efforts of a group of battery hens led by
Ginger (voiced by Julia Sawalha from Absolutely Fabulous)
to escape the clutches of Mr and Mrs Tweedy.
Various
attempts fail with Ginger thrown in the coal bunker. Think
Steve McQueen in the "cooler" in The Great Escape
and you can see where Chicken Run is coming from.
The arrival
of Mel Gibson's Rocky the Rooster seems the answer to all
their problems. However, the would-be American hero is not
all he seems to be.
With jokes
based on films like Star Trek, Indiana Jones and even a light-hearted
poke at British politics, there is enough to entertain the
grown-ups as well as the children.
Having
already proved a screen-smash in America expect more Aardman
full-length features in the years ahead. If they are as good
as Chicken Run they will be well worth the wait. "Crackin'
Gromit," as Wallace might say.
