Dionne - the
third member of the Bacharach/David team

Back on tour
(and coming to Nottingham) Dionne shows us what all the fuss is
about.
Lileth Burgetta
It's a bit of
a surprise but for all her classy interpretations of Burt Bacharach
/ Hal David songs, Dionne Warwick's biggest hit in the UK was the
1982 song Heartbreaker.
It reached number
2 and gives this latest collection of hits its title.
That said, the
album is dominated by those easy listening gems from the 60s.
The usual suspects
appear. Walk On By, San Jose, The Look of Love and I'll Never Fall
In Love Again.
Usual maybe,
but no matter how often your hear them they still make you sit up
and take notice; such is the class of Bacharach and David and the
way Warwick conveys the song.
Compare her
take on Alfie with Cilla's screech. No contest.
After a bust
up with Mr Bacharach, Dionne's hits dried up until the Gibb brothers
stepped in with some Bee Gees magic.
Thus Heartbreaker
and All The Love In The World put the singer back in the limelight.
Three years
later Bacharach was back on board and That's What Friends Are For
was raising money for AIDS research.
The songs here
are great, the voice is sheer perfection.
It's not a definitive
collection. There's no Promises, Promises or Make It Easy On Yourself.
Given that Aretha
Franklin recently had a double CD of her finest moments, it's
a shame the same wasn't done for Dionne.
Still, this
remains a classy collection.
Heartbreaker
is released on BMG / WSM WSMCD101.
