Nottingham Castle - Gatehouse |
The castle was originally built to command the bridge
over the River Trent on an important route from London to York.
The gatehouse was the only external gate into the medieval castle.
The gatehouse was built between 1251 and 1255 and stood two storeys
high with a thick timber door, a portcullis and a drawbridge.
The moat over which the drawbridge spanned has now been filled in
to form the entrance on which you now stand.
