Great Yorkshire ShowYou are in: North Yorkshire > Entertainment > Great Yorkshire Show > Under Starter's Orders Under Starter's OrdersBy Adam Holmes Some of the biggest cheers at the Great Yorkshire Show are reserved for the young horse riders involved in the 'Mounted Games' competitions. Teams battle it out in races which test their agility and horse riding skills to the limit. "It's the thrill of it" says fifteen year old Will, the current Junior European Champion "it gets the adrenalin flowing and it's a fantastic sport to be in". Will took up the sport in 2002, when he was ten. Earlier this year he was chosen for the England team and has twice competed at the Horse of the Year Show.
Mounted Games originated in India, as a way for the British army to improve the horse riding skills of mounted soldiers. Teams of riders have to complete a variety of high speed relay style races, during which they've got to perform certain tasks or demonstrate particular skills. Teams from all over the UK take part in the competitions at the Great Yorkshire Show. Mary Worth, from the Mounted Games Association, says the horses and riders have to be "extremely fit, extremely agile, well schooled and well trained."
Help playing audio/video The skills of both rider and horse are tested to the limit by the tasks they are required to perform and there can often be some spectacular tumbles. Will says the Great Yorkshire Show is a "fantastic" event to compete at and he loves the way the partisan Yorkshire crowd cheers on teams from Yorkshire. last updated: 25/06/2008 at 12:10 You are in: North Yorkshire > Entertainment > Great Yorkshire Show > Under Starter's Orders
