Pond perfection!A scheme to enhance the pond in the picturesque village of Thornton-le-Dale has proved a success. Now ducks have returned and waterside planting is flourishing. Work to enhance the pond in the popular village of Thornton le Dale has been completed. New trees, plants and shrubs are now thriving in the area which is enjoyed by local people and visitors. The pond was suffering from silting and trees blocking out the natural light but was given a facelift, thanks to a partnership between the North York Moors National Park Authority, the Parish Council, Thornton le Dale Traders Forum and the village school.
The dredging work, which was carried out by a local contractor, led to the discovery of eels, two six pound trout and a colony of swan mussels 鈥 an excellent indication of a healthy pond. Resident ducks and other waterfowl returned to their homes almost as soon as it was re-filled with water. Volunteers from the National Park Authority have also completed work to stabilise the edge of the pond, using live willow donated by the Environment Agency, and the island in the centre has been cleared and landscaped.

A 鈥榥uttery鈥, packed with plants rich in nuts and seeds, was planted by local schoolchildren to attract more birdlife to the pond. Smart new benches have been installed where people can sit and enjoy the natural environment.听
The work was funded by a grant of 拢20,000 from Yorventure, which is backed by Northallerton based waste management company Yorwaste Ltd. The North York Moors National Park Authority has also contributed 拢20,000 to the project. Thornton le Dale residents were consulted before the plans were drawn up so that the finished scheme met local needs. Jay Marrison, Southern Area Ranger for the National Park Authority, is delighted with the way the project has gone. He says 鈥淲e hope that the work will encourage a greater diversity of wildlife to flourish in and around the pond and will enable even more people to enjoy and appreciate its tranquil setting.鈥 last updated: 15/04/2008 at 11:40 You are in: North Yorkshire > Nature > Nature features > Pond perfection!
