Juanita Stein from Howling Bells said she enjoyed the gig a lot, and the York crowd were wonderful! The Australian band appeared ready to present their musical talents as well as prepare to have a fun time touring around the UK. What do they sound like? When asked whether she agreed their music sounds like PJ Harvey's, Juanita said 'we take that as a compliment!'
There was no doubt that they've really got a terrific vocalist in the band. Hard to believe such a tiny little-girl-like Juanita, with a sweet smile, could produce such a voice with great strength. Indeed they performed a marvellous set--Howling Bells' music has got a great variety. From pop, to rock, to country, what could be heard was totally intoxicating.

Also on stage were four more excellent musicians; what also worth mentioning was they got the looks too. The one attracting the most attention, apart from Juanita, had to be Glenn Moule the drummer, who had on a cowboy hat. His occasional smiles must have mesmerized loads of fans...听 At the venue it was not exceptionally busy but apparently among the audience there were a few of Howling Bells' biggest groupies. A big treat to the fans was that Howling Bells are friendly rock stars: instead of dashing off to their hotel beds, they stayed for the clubbing night and were happily dancing with their fans until 2AM! After their last song 'Low Happening' the show ended, and although the fans were still screaming and shouting for more, the venue had to be turned into a DJ and clubbers' wonderland, therefore the crowd's request was in vain. They have a tight schedule touring around the UK at the moment, including an NME Awards show at London Astoria and also a couple more gigs back up North in March. Don't miss them! Howling Bells also mentioned that they think York is a truly beautiful city and Fibbers is one of the coolest venues--they enjoyed the night themselves. They also thanked everyone who made it down to the gig. Wanyu Lin |
