St. Patrick's In Heaven
by Geraldine Mc Mullan Doherty

I dreamed I was going to heaven
And wondered; what awaits me up here
When I saw St Peter with open arms
His smile took away my fear

Ìý

My parents were standing beside him
Overwhelmed to see me come
I was overjoyed and tearful
To see my dad and mum

Ìý

They took my hands and walked me
To a garden of paradise
A man I knew was Jesus
Showed in His kind and loving eyes

Ìý

He said, "Welcome to my Kingdom
All you dream of will all be here
Everything here is beautiful
Wonderful things you will hear

Ìý

I asked my parents "what day is it?"
They said "Saint Patrick's Day today
There's a place here awaits you
Come! we'll show you the way"

Ìý

We passed rows of scented roses
Little song birds in the sky
Beautiful flowers and fountains
With butterflies gliding by

Ìý

Double gates stood before me
Made of gold and glittering bright
St Peter opened them like magic
I held my parents hands more tight

Ìý

To my amazement appeared St Patrick
With his staff and beautiful cloak
Shamrocks adorned this garden
He said, "Come in and see your folk

Ìý

I thought my eyes were deceiving me
Everyone was having a ball
They all lined up to greet me
And kissed me one and all

Ìý

There was my granny Brennan
Her arthritis now gone away
My granda right beside her
I knew I'd meet some day

Ìý

I embraced dad's brothers and sisters
And John my mum's brother
I gave a special kiss to
My dad's father and mother

Ìý

The welcome was overwhelming
I noticed the wearing of the green
There was music in the background
And little dancing colleens

Ìý

I could see Guinness and Irish whiskey
More colleens dancing reels
My aunts and uncles singing
While tapping their toes and heels

Ìý

There was even our dog Rover
He was wearing an Irish hat
He sat beside Sylvester
Our black and white cat

Ìý

Then visions appeared before us
We were in all Ireland's ground
One minute we were in Killarney
The next in St Patrick's Mound

Ìý

I looked at my mother and father
They looked so young and well
Dancing in each others arms
They were happy , I could tell!

Ìý

The Irish tunes were playing
On the fiddle was Darby O Gill
King Brian and his leprechauns
Drinking poteen to the fill

Ìý

So if I go to heaven
And I see those golden gates
I know I will be happy
Because I have seen now what awaits!
