The murder of three men within 48 hours by dissident republicans provoked widespread concern that the "dark days" of the Troubles were returning. Security alerts in Derry brought back disturbing memories.

Trade Unionists, Liam Gallagher and Eamonn McCann described the attacks by dissident republicans as "despicable". Their message was that such murders should never be allowed to happen again.

OUR NAME

The wider public got their chance to express their views on the killings when trade unions organised silent rallies in Derry, Belfast and Newry. Gareth Scott, the regional national organiser with the Union Unite, said the actions of so called Dissident republicans were "not in our name".

ALERT

Pensioners caught up in a security alert in Derry's Waterside said they feared a return to the worst days of the Troubles. Several homes in Bann Drive were evacuated while the police and army dealt with a suspicious object found in a lay-by near the Irish Street interface. It was declared an elaborate hoax but as our reporter Teresa Craig discovered, the alert unsettled people in the area.
