One man died of hypothermia after making his home in a public toilet in Derry. The story emerged on the Paul McFadden show after a local councillor found a friend sleeping rough behind a hedge near the Guildhall. Street-drinkers were sleeping rough in the doorway of a hostel for the homeless, which was lying empty. Then a local businessman put a portable building in the car park near Craigavon Bridge for the down-and-outs to shelter in. The Mayor convened a meeting which secured funding for a crash facility, in Carlisle Road. At the start of December, the authorities acted, by opening a new shelter there.
