MARTIN MCGUINNESS MET DYING PRIEST, JAMES CHESNESY
Ìý
The Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, has admitted meeting the priest suspected of involvement in the Claudy bombing.
Ìý
Mr McGuinness had previously said he had not had any contact with, or knowledge of, Father James Chesney. Nine people died in the village in the bombings in 1972. A Police Ombudsman's report into what happened revealed that detectives believed Father Chesney was the IRA's "director of operations" in south County Derry. Mr McGuinness has confirmed that he was the IRA's second in command of the IRA in 1972. Enda McClafferty, on the Morning programme, asked Mr McGuinness to explain why he had not previously confirmed that he had met Father Chesney.
