Our eyes met across a deserted street. The day was dull and grey, typical of November and we were the only two people on the High Street. His ruby eyes sparkled with, what looked like, anticipation as he walked over the road, there were no cars and the curtains in all the houses were drawn, despite it being the start of the rush hour. He stopped in front of me and smiled, revealing a row of perfectly white teeth; and two long, sharp fangs. I heard myself gasp at the sight of them and a sense of panic rose up inside me. I started to back away and collided with something, I whipped round to find a girl staring down at me and the next thing I knew we were standing in thick, dark forest. I could feel the girl twisting one of my arms, painfully, behind my back as the boy emerged out of the shadows. He moved forward and I felt my head jerk backwards, exposing my neck. As the boy's teeth made contact with my skin I felt a sharp pain, before everything went black. I jerked awake, tangled up in my bedsheets and realised that one of my earrings was piercing my neck and... I was late for school, again. I jumped out of bed and dressed quickly, brushed my messy hair back from my face and swept some mascara over my eyelashes. I skidded downstairs, snatched my bag up off the floor and ran out of the front door, into the cold, November air. As I jogged along my road, I glanced at my watch and groaned as I realised that I wasn't late, I was early. I decided that it wasn't worth going home again and started walking, I was daydreaming about summer when I turned onto the High Street and remembered my dream. I glanced around quickly and noticed that the roads were empty and that everyone's curtains were drawn, exactly like in my dream. I told myself to stop it, vampires didn't exist and anyway, nothing interesting ever happens where I live. Even if it did, it wouldn't happen to me. The street around me was completely empty, a thick fog was starting to settle as I tried to convince myself that it was only a dream and that it meant nothing. I'd almost managed it, when suddenly a boy walked out of the thick cloud, he looked up and his ruby eyes met mine. I shuddered involuntarily as I remembered last night and then forced myself to forget about it. I didn't notice that the boy had crossed the street until he was standing in front of me, he smiled and revealed those long, sharp, glistening fangs that I was finding so hard to believe anyone could actually have. I heard myself gasp and wondered why I'd done that. I'd known what was coming, after all it wasn't so long ago that I'd been living this moment in time, and then it hit me. As I backed away and collided with someone, as I turned to find a girl standing there, as I felt something prick my arm, as I fell into blackness, I realised that I was reliving everything that had happened to me in my dream. The unfairness of it all seemed too much, I'd been given a warning and now, I seemed powerless to do anything to heed it. I could only watch and try to forget that I was about to die. Somehow, I was still mulling it over when my world was in black. When dim light finally started to filter through the darkness I realised, with a cold dread what part of the dream was coming next, this was where the dream ended, and I died. I came back into consciousness with a jolt, an aching head and a painful twisted arm. I remembered through the pain that the girl was twisting it hard behind my back, where the headache had come from I didn't know, but I guessed that it had something to do with whatever they'd used to make me black-out. The boy stepped out of the trees and moved towards me and he smiled again, a wolfish grin, as my head snapped backwards. I felt his teeth, pierce deep into my skin and a sharp pain shot through my body. The last thing I remembered thinking was that I hadn't said goodbye to any of my family, and then the world turned black. I woke up on a bed in a room smelling strongly of disinfectant. At first I wasn't sure what had happened, then I remembered the dream, and the boy and girl. I sat up quickly, my eyes wide with shock. I'd woken up after he'd bitten me in my dream, so I had no idea what had happened afterwards. I looked around and realised that I was in hospital, the room was empty. A machine sat making one continuous noise next to me, I looked at it and realised, with a jolt, that the heartbeat line was flat. A door opened at the end of the room and a doctor entered, he regarded me with some surprise when he saw that I was sitting up. "Sarah, you have no heartbeat." The doctor said, looking at the heartbeat monitor and frowning. "I kinda noticed that." I said, weakly. "There's someone outside that wants to talk to you." The doctor said, looking at the machine again and then walking out of the room. The door opened again and the boy from before came in. He sat down on the edge of my bed and smiled at me, this time his teeth were normal. "Sarah, I'm Vaugn." His voice was soft and velvety. "What did you do to me?" I asked, faintly. "Welcome to my world." He smiled again and tapped two of my teeth, I suddenly realised what he'd done to me, and I wasn't so sure I liked it. |
