The Pledge

Boy meets girl they fall in love
Their hearts both flutter like the wings of a dove
Gifts for the future make them smile
As hand in hand they walk down the aisle
Happiness and love they betroth to each other
And one day she hopes to become a mother
They struggle on year by year
Yet their lives are still happy and full of good cheer
Their family has now grown by three
But to have a child was not meant to be
Two dogs and a cat share their home
With the freedom within the garden all three of them roam.

But life is not always as sweet as a rose
And before long the factories start to close
They carry on in their chosen careers
But times are hard and they are soon in arrears
An overdraft is a peace of mind
To pay the mortgage and bills of every kind
Then one of them falls ill
To raise the overdraft was a bitter pill
More and more bills to pay
Was security ever going to come their way
Things go from bad to worse
No more pennies left in the purse
One of the dogs is taken ill
All the cash gone to pay the vets bill
They struggle on their lives of strife
Yet dedicated they remain as man and wife
Always living on the edge
Remembering their vows that they did pledge.

Christmas a time of happiness and cheer
A companion lost the occasional tear
Our two dogs are now just one
Forever in paradise our doggy son
