On the seventh day the Creator rested and looked at all that he had created and saw that it was good. The Developer could not rest, for technology, commerce and industry still had to be developed. And the Developer said: 'Let us develop the spare land around the town to build factories so that the people can earn money to spend in our shops.' So on the ruins of the old factories and on the wasteland, new factories were built that consumed the earth's resources. Day and night industry ravaged the earth and converted its richness into profit. The Developer saw that it was good. This was the end of the sixth day. And the Developer said: 'Let us tear down the trees and forests around the town so that we can build giant iron structures in which to store the things we have made.' And so it was. Outside the town great earthmovers were brought in to clear the land of all that was green and healthy. Concrete fields were laid and tall iron forests planted which soon germinated into dense structures that towered over the town. The Developer sat and counted his profits, and saw that it was good. This was the end of the fifth day. Then the Developer said: 'Let us create an infrastructure so that we can sell our products quickly and make more money. The people will get to their work without delay, and to their places of leisure without dawdling through the countryside.' So among the concrete fields great transport routes were laid. Cars and lorries travelled at high speeds in all directions and a cloud of carbon emission rose silently into the air. The fourth day. On the third day before, the Developer said: 'Let us build expansive housing so that more people can come to work in our factories and make for us more money.' On the edge of the town many houses were built, each one looking the same as the other. The families that lived there cared little for the landscape that had once surrounded them. They created an ever-growing mountain of discarded packaging and wastefully consumed energy. Such was the effect on the climate of this wasteful living, the sea levels rose as did the temperature. The Developer considered his profits and saw that it was good. On the second day before, the Developer said: 'Let us protect ourselves from this ever changing environment. The waters of the sea are threatening that which we have built, and the extreme temperatures disrupt our wheels of commerce.' So a vast concrete dome was built above the town to separate the land from the sky and the ever rising sea. Within the dome the inhabitants continued their lives uninterrupted by the changing environment and unaware of the changing world outside. The Developer looked up at the concrete sky and saw that it was good. On the day before, the Developer said: 'Let there be a great light that will shine constantly so that commerce will be unaffected by night and day.' And so a great light was built at the pinnacle of the grey dome to shine upon the land both day and night. No longer would the lives of the people be controlled by the rising and going down of the sun. The first day before the end. In the end the waters raged outside the dome and the damaged climate ravaged the remaining landscape. The earth was now empty and without form. Darkness covered the surface of the now deep waters. But within the dome, lives continued unaware of the storms outside. Then the Creator arose from his resting and hovered over the waters. Dismayed at what had become of his creation, he stood and said: 'Let there be light.' And there was light... |
