Presenters' thoughts on Forum move

The
move to the Forum is just one in a long list of changes that presenter Stewart White has witnessed during his career at Look East.

While journalists will now be able to edit at their desks, filming stories used to be a more cumbersome process when Stewart joined the programme in 1984.

"When I first arrived here we were shooting on film," said Stewart.

"The cameraman used to carry a black bag with him which he would use to take the raw film out of the camera and put into a can.

"Once we were back in the building the film would have to be processed and then it was physically cut using a splicing tool," he said.

Last minute alterations to scripts on the autocue were also almost impossible when Stewart came to Norwich.

"Autocue was on a paper roll then," he said. "The whole roll was typed up separately by an autocue operator and physically rolled through a camera.

"Now it's all done using the computer, which means we can change it right up to the last minute," he added.

Susie
Fowler-Watt joined Look East in 1997 after working as 91Èȱ¬ East's political correspondent at Westminster for three years.

One of the first things which struck her when she entered the St Catherine's Close station was its homely feel.

"I thought it was a beautiful building, especially the front hall with its sweeping staircase. It also had a very friendly, cosy atmosphere - very different from the newsroom at Westminster," she said.

The building also holds some special memories for Susie, who met her husband, journalist Alex Dunlop, at Look East.

"My happiest memory is probably the last day before Alex and I went off to get married," she said.

"Being a control freak, I can normally see where every second of the programme is allocated, but on this occasion the producer had managed to hide a whole minute from me.

"At the end of the programme, Stewart started talking about my wedding and I realised I had no idea what was going on. People gave me flowers and they put Alex up in the monitor next to me. All I kept saying was thank you, thank you," she added.

However, she is pleased to be leaving behind the station's old equipment.

"The technology should make a huge difference to what we can achieve on air. Also, because we knew we were moving we've been using old and often broken equipment for such a long time," she said.

She admits though that saying goodbye to the Look East desk will take some getting used to.

"People will be able to see my legs, but I'm hoping the shots will be a bit more flattering! The seats are more comfy too!"

While
viewers at home see Julie Reinger forecasting the weather standing next to a map, she is actually pointing to a blue sheet.

But with the move to the Forum, Julie should be able to see the chart beside her for the first time.

"Most people know that I work against a plain blue screen and that I can't actually see the maps behind me," she said.

"This may well change when we re-launch from the new building with the graphics actually being projected onto my backdrop.

"Basically what you see on your television screen will be what I see in the studio," she said.

The open-plan layout of the Forum will also make it a very different place to work compared with St Catherine's Close.

"I'll miss the building's very unique and homely feel and its endless corridors," she said.

"On my first day I got well and truly lost on the way to the studio! I'll also miss our wonderful canteen staff who've kept me so well fed," she added.
