Results:

The blue liquid turns red! Lemon juice is an acid and acids turn the cabbage juice a pinky-red colour.
Next, try adding a little of the bicarbonate of soda. Give the mixture a shake again and see what happens.
The liquid turns blue again! Bicarbonate of soda is alkaline and when you mix it with water it turns the cabbage juice blue.


How about putting in some clear vinegar?

Can you predict what happens? Here's a hint - lemon juice is an acid.

Yes, vinegar turns the cabbage juice red again!

You can try doing this with some other household liquids, but you must ask an adult which liquids you can use.
