There are hours of fun to be had at Inspire

Martine Brigstock wanted to take her seven-year-old out on an afternoon with a difference.

Having fun while learning about new things were top of her list, so she set off with two children in tow to Norwich's Inspire Hands-on Science Centre.

During the school holidays I did something I wanted to do for ages. That was to take my seven-year-old son and his 11-year-old friend to Inspire in Coslany Street.

The last time we visited was early on a Sunday morning with my then five-year-old son and two- year-old daughter.

The exhibits are all safe but I was amazed how dangerous my daughter could make some of the things, like chairs, and so the visit was fraught.

Buzzing atmosphere

But this time the place was buzzing with loads of children having great fun finding out all about the senses, gravity, electricity, sound, the power of hot air and all sorts of things.

PIc: Two boys with model of the human body.
Ergh, where does that go?

My two spent ages playing with the Inside Story display where they had put all of the body's organs back into the right place on the model.

They were also amazed to find that they could build a bridge out of blocks, strong enough to take their body weight.

They scared themselves silly with touchy-feely boxes, torturing themselves with terrible ideas about what they may be touching.

Science squad highlight

But the highlight for us was the Science Squad Roadshow. The centre's James Piercy presented the Really Gross Show where he spoke about emissions...bodily ones...of the solid, liquid and gaseous variety!

Pic: The model of George.
Poor George! He has spots, a cold and bad ear wax

He performed this with the help of George who seemed to ooze snot, puss, spit and ear wax on cue.

Then we moved onto another biology lesson, which was as interesting as it was ghastly!

We learned what poos are made of, how to make a cup of cold sick and finished off with the "incredible story about Joseph Pujol and his remarkable rear".

Entertained and educated

We all loved it and spent a good couple of hours being thoroughly entertained and educated.

But the trip didn't end there. My two then headed for the science shop with pocket-money priced toys, games and experiment packs which make a good change from the tat often on offer.

The kids loved it and as for me, well I can鈥檛 wait to learn something new from the next lot of lectures and experiments.
