Hickling Broad is the largest of the lakes that make
up the Norfolk Broads. It covers more than 140 hectares and is surrounded
by extensive areas of reed bed and grazing marsh.
The Norfolk Wildlife Trust own and maintain the
broad as a National Nature Reserve. Visitors can take water trail
boat trips aboard a replica reed lighter, a traditional broads boat
used for carrying cut reeds. It is one of the best places in the
country to see Britain's largest butterfly, the swallowtail.
Birdwatchers share the broad with anglers, river
cruisers and sailing enthusiasts.
