A romantic guide to Norfolk

If you're looking for the perfect place to take your date this Valentine's Day, then our guide to Norfolk's most romantic places is just what you need. With secluded woodland walks, romantic beaches and steam trains, there's something for everyone.

It's that time of year when budgets are blown in an attempt to create the perfect Valentine's Day experience for your partner. With flowers, chocolates, jewellery and restaurants to pay for, it can soon end up being a very expensive affair.

But you don't have to spend a small fortune to treat your other half to a day that would make Cassanova proud. Norfolk Tourism are on hand to help you out with their guide to Norfolk's most romantic places - perfect for creating a truly special date.

Romantic destination

Norfolk is a beautiful county and there are plenty of locations guaranteed to help you woo your other half. If you're trying to impress on a first date or just want to rekindle some old romance, then head off to one of Norfolk's ideal romantic locations.

"Norfolk is the perfect romantic destination with miles of wonderful coastline to explore, along with the fabulous Norfolk Broads and a great selection of pubs and restaurants for that special meal," said Lydia Smith, Director of Tourism at Norfolk Tourism.

"Not to forget Norwich's beautiful historic buildings and lanes - just the place to pick up a special Valentine's gift - and our wonderful market towns and villages," she added.

Blickling Park and lake

For the cultural couple, Blickling Hall provides an ideal location. The hall boasts an impressive collection of books, tapestries, paintings and sculptures. Pack a picnic and head off into the grounds, find a picturesque spot and get wooing!

Blickling Hall - ideal for romance

Built in the early 17th Century, Blickling is one of England's great Jacobean houses. The Hall is set in an historic park with miles of beautiful woodland and lakeside walks – it even has a pyramid-shaped Mausoleum. Located just outside Aylsham, Blickling Hall also host weddings, just in case your date turns out really well!

Holkham Beach and Holkham Park

Take a romantic early morning stroll along the beach at Holkham. Pack a Valentine's breakfast, sit back amongst the dunes and watch the sun rise over the ocean.

After breakfast enjoy the tranquility of Holkham Park and wander through the woods spotting wildlife along the way

Located on the north Norfolk coast, Holkham Hall and its grounds were conceived by Thomas Coke, the first Earl of Leicester. The hall was his vision of an Italian villa on the windswept coastline of Norfolk. The family has lived there continuously since the 1750s.

Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden, South Walsham

Located in the heart of the Norfolk Broads, this oasis of calm is guaranteed to help you both escape the stresses of modern life. The garden has over three miles of walks, on which you can take in beautiful flowers, cross rustic bridges and enjoy the wildlife.

The garden was left in trust by the 2nd Lord Fairhaven in 1973 and was opened to the public in 1975. It covers 131 acres of beautiful ancient woodland, water gardens and a private broad at South Walsham. Most of the garden is accessible to visitors in wheelchairs.

Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, Welney

If you like birds then head to Welney - one of the many reserves in Norfolk. 91Èȱ¬ to a varied selection of species, you'll both be immersed in the natural beauty of the reserve. Hopefully not too immersed to neglect each other!

Love has always been in the Norfolk air

Elm Hill: Love is in the air

Welney is located to the south west of Downham Market and the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust is open all year. The passing of the seasons provides an ever-changing array of avian visitors to grace this beautiful Norfolk habitat.

Norwich Riverside walk

If you want a romantic location in the heart of the city, then the Norwich Riverside walk offers the perfect opportunity for holding hands and taking a leisurely stroll.

Enjoy the beautiful sights that Norwich has to offer, including the austere ruins of Cow Tower and the picture-postcard Pull's Ferry.

If you get tired of walking you can always join one of the boat tours that run daily.

The Riverside walk is about 1.5 miles long, but you can extend or shorten it to suit you. The Tudor street on Elm Hill offers traditional tea rooms if you want to stop off and have lunch.

Walsingham Abbey grounds

If you've reached that point in your relationship when you're sure you've met 'the one', then head to Walsingham. Who knows, this ruined priory might just seal the deal - and what better place to get down on one knee than a site of religious pilgrimage.

Walsingham is situated four miles from the beautiful north Norfolk coast, between Wells-next-the-Sea and Fakenham.

The site houses the remains of the Abbey, as well as a museum dedicated to the history of the Priory. The picturesque village offers a chance to escape the trappings of modern day high streets.

North Norfolk Railway

What form of transport is more romantic than a steam train. For that perfect date why not try the North Norfolk Railway.

Sit back and take in the beautiful scenery as the train passes through 10 miles of north Norfolk countryside. Hop off at one of the stops, explore the stations and marvel at the steam laden atmosphere from a bygone age.

The train runs between Sheringham and Holt stopping off at Weybourne and Kelling Heath Park along the way. Buy a rollover ticket and, if your date is going well, you can travel back and forth all day. Buffet facilities are also available on some trains.
