In the last year, sales of electric cars have gone up by more than 20%, and are still rising - so don't be surprised if you end up learning to drive in an electric car.

Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And, most of the big car manufacturers now make electric cars too.

Five electrifying facts about electric cars
  • Electric cars aren't anything new - in fact a Scottish inventor called Robert Anderson created the first electric carriage back in the 1830s.

  • They can be super quiet when travelling at low speeds - but that's not necessarily a good thing. From next year new electric cars will have to give out a sound so other road users can hear when they're nearby.

  • Some politicians want new diesel and petrol cars i.e. cars that aren't electric, to be banned in the UK by 2032.

  • Lots of people want drivers in the UK to use electric cars and are tempting them with perks like free parking and money off car prices.

  • Just like your phone, electric cars need charging up. Right now there are more than 6,500 charging locations in the UK.
