Jersey's new general hospital will be built in St Helier, according to the health minister.

A new site for the hospital has been discussed for years, with more than 50 sites considered by officials.

Earlier in 2015 Senator Andrew Green rejected a previously proposed two-site hospital, saying it should all be on a single site.

He has now confirmed it will not be out of the island's capital, citing transport and parking problems.

Mr Green said four sites were being considered in St Helier.

The most likely sites are thought to be the current hospital site, the Overdale hospital site, People's Park or the St Helier Waterfront.

Mr Green said: "If you built it on the waterfront, and it is a site under consideration, it would have to be nine storeys high.

"I'm comfortable with it but others won't be. Whichever site we pick you are going to please some people and upset others."
