Jersey's goods and services tax to rise to 5% in June

People living in Jersey will have to pay more for a range of goods after politicians approved an increase in the goods and services tax (GST).

Islanders are charged GST on most items such as newspapers, food and petrol and a proposal to exempt food and fuel was rejected on Thursday.

Politicians approved the budget put forward by the Treasury and Resources Minister Senator Philip Ozouf.

The 3% tax, which was introduced in May 2008, will rise to 5% in June 2011.
