Ecclestons bakery to close down after 112 years

A 112-year-old bakery with 10 stores across north Wales has closed.

Customer notices in Ecclestons Confectioners shops thank customers for their loyalty and support, but explain that despite "surviving two World Wars", the business is to close.

Nobody could be contacted at the company's Wrexham base, or the town's Market Street shop.

It has been reported the closure will result in 12 full-time staff and 30 part time workers being made redundant.

A notice in an empty Wrexham shop read: "Ecclestons Confectioners which was established 1898 and has spanned four generations of the family, is to close.

"The business began when Arthur Eccleston and his new bride took the first tentative steps by opening a shop in Yorke Street Wrexham specialising in pork pies, sausage rolls and custard tarts.

"The business survived two world wars, several recessions and at their peak had 15 shops and three cafes.

"The Eccleston family wish most sincerely to thank their customers for their loyalty and support over many years."

The business has shops across Wrexham, in Llangollen and Corwen in Denbighshire, and in Bala, Gwynedd.
