Restricted access to free tennis courts across Wales

The chance to play tennis for free in Wales is highly dependent on where you live.

Research by Newyddion has revealed the number of free courts in each local authority area ranged from 40 to none.

Of the 19 councils that responded to the question, Pembrokeshire had the most with 46 courts - 40 free ones.

There are no free courts in Merthyr Tydfil, Gwynedd or Anglesey and other councils have been forced to close some due to cash shortages or condition.

Bridgend, Merthyr Tydfil, Vale of Glamorgan and Wrexham councils have all had to close some courts due to their condition or budget restraints, or had them re-designed as playgrounds.

Tennis Wales said over the past four years, club membership in Wales has increased from 12,000 to 15,000.

Tennis is now the fourth highest participation sport for primary school children behind football, swimming and rugby.
