A car was intentionally reversed into a Glasgow nightclub and set alight, police have confirmed.

Emergency crews were called to the Sanctuary nightclub on Dumbarton Road in the city's west end at about 23:40.

Police said after reversing the grey-coloured Volkswagen Tiguan - which is thought to have been stolen - two men got out of the car and set it on fire.

They then fled in a blue Audi RS3. No-one was injured and the nightclub was closed at the time.

The Audi was later found by police in Strachur Crescent in Lambhill.

'Noticed the occupants'

Police confirmed that the majority of fire damage was focused on the Tiguan, while the nightclub's door suffered superficial damage.

Forensic officers are due to examine the car and police said they were in the process of gathering CCTV footage and would be carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the area.

Det Insp Mark McLennan said: "Our inquiries are at an early stage and we are working to establish why this property has been targeted.

"Fortunately, the club was closed and there have been no injuries, however it is imperative we trace whoever is responsible for this crime.

"This is a busy road and I'm appealing to motorists, taxi drivers, anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident to contact us.

"You may have seen either of the vehicles and noticed the occupants and you could have information which could assist our investigation."
