Southern Cross: New owner for hundreds of care homes

Hundreds of care homes previously run by Darlington-based Southern Cross have been taken over by a new company following its collapse in July.

Landlord NHP and care home operator Court Cavendish have formed HC-One - taking over control of one third of homes across the country.

One home in Middlesbrough, nine in County Durham and three in Stockton are among the 241 homes taken over.

The care home provider, which ran 752 homes, collapsed with losses of 拢300m.

HC-One chairman, Dr Chai Patel, said: "After months of uncertainty for residents, relatives and staff, we are delighted and honoured to be starting this new era.

"I want to thank residents and their families for their patience and staff for their commitment and hard work during the recent difficult period.

"Looking ahead we are committed to improving the quality of services and properties, retaining and developing the kindest and best staff, and improving the occupancy in our homes.

"Those are our goals and that is our promise."
