A moderator of an unofficial football fans' page on Facebook has apologised for posting a racist comment about Norwich City manager Chris Hughton.

The man, in his 40s and from Norfolk, accepted a "restorative justice outcome" after police investigated.

He said although he deleted the comment, he realised he had been "highly irresponsible" to post it on a public forum.

He is to meet equality campaign Kick It Out to undertake "further education".

His comment was posted on the social networking site in October.

Kick It Out said in a statement that it had worked with Chris Hughton, Norwich City FC and Norfolk Police to agree the outcome.

"This case acts as a reminder to social media users that posting offensive or discriminatory remarks will not be tolerated," it said.

The man apologised for using the word "monkey", saying: "Although it was not my intention to use this term in a racist context, I now fully accept that the term is often used in that way and that therefore it was unacceptable and inappropriate to use it about Mr Hughton in my post.

"We all have a responsibility when using social media to use appropriate language."
