Murder arrest after woman dies in Preston assault
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was was found dead following "a brutal assault".
Police were called to reports of an altercation on Pope Lane in Ribbleton, Preston, at 02:00 GMT on Thursday.
The body, which police initially thought was a man, was found near the junction with Village Drive and remains at the scene for forensic inquiries.
A 25-year-old man from Preston was arrested close to the scene and remains in custody, Lancashire Police said.
The woman died at the scene.
Det Chf Insp Geoff Hurst said: "We know that she has been the victim of a brutal assault."
He said the woman's body "remains where it was found whilst we carry out our forensic inquiries" which "could take some time".
"I would urge anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the area at the time to get in touch as soon as possible", he added.
