London 2012: Olympic torch to ride Derbyshire cable car during relay
The Olympic torch is to be taken on a cable car ride over Matlock Bath during the Derbyshire leg of its nationwide relay in the build-up to London 2012.
A torchbearer will carry the flame on to the famous sky-ride at the Heights of Abraham on 29 June.
The procession will arrive in Glapwell in the morning before heading to Bolsover, Calow and Chesterfield
Derby City Council said it was planning a major celebration to mark the torch's overnight stay in the city.
The 70-day relay begins at Land's End, Cornwall, on 19 May and arrives at the Olympic opening ceremony in London on 27 July.
Andrew Pugh, managing director of the Heights of Abraham, said: "Everyone here is thrilled and honoured to learn that we will welcome the Olympic torch in 2012.
'Great opportunity'
"During its journey from Greece to the Olympic city of London, the iconic cable cars will transport the torch to the summit of the Heights creating an Olympic moment for Derbyshire's oldest tourist attraction and everyone throughout the Derwent Valley."
David James, chief executive of Visit Peak District and Derbyshire, said it was a great opportunity for the region.
He said: "We're delighted that the Olympic torch relay route will be passing through so much of our varied and beautiful area en route to the capital.
"It's the ideal chance for both local people and visitors to immerse themselves in the fun and excitement during the build-up to next year's Games.
"Local tourism businesses and attractions have the potential to capitalise by offering special deals and promotions to bring people into the area to join in the celebrations.
"We are currently planning a series of briefings to help them make the most of the opportunities that getting involved could bring."
