Former Stow cum Quy pub could be turned into place of worship

A former pub near Cambridge could be knocked down to make way for a place of worship.

The Radegund Gospel Hall Trust wants to demolish The Wheatsheaf in Stow cum Quy, which shut in 2019.

It would be replaced with a single storey building for the more than 200 members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Churches in the county.

The trust said the plan would mean the loss of a pub but insisted converting the building was not practical.

The plans stated: "Demolition is considered as necessary because the conversion of this pub to a place of worship would be unviable for the group."

The application said the building had "sustained significant damage" caused by a water leak in the loft "over an extended period of time", making "expensive and unviable" to repair.

Conversion into a place of worship was also "unviable", meaning demolition was "necessary" to "deliver the proposed use".

Plans will be considered by the district council at a later date.
