French avalanche app warns skiers of risks

A new mobile app alerting winter sports enthusiasts to the risk of avalanches nearby has been launched by the French weather agency.

The combines standard weather data with information on snow quality and depth at each resort, crucial when determining the likelihood of an avalanche. Users select their location and are given a combination of at-a-glance summaries and detailed reports on the conditions on different parts of the slopes. Avalanche risk on a scale of one to five, with the highest warning indicating weakly bonded, unstable snow and a very high danger of numerous snowslides.

The free app gets its data from more than 100 ski patrol staff working at resorts in both France and Andorra, . While it's so far only available in French, an English version is in the works.

The 2014/2015 winter season saw at least 45 people killed in avalanches in France, of the previous year. There have been several tragedies this year too, among them the deaths of three people - including two schoolchildren - who were struck by an avalanche at the resort of Les Deux Alpes in January.
