Public praised by police for tackling suspect

Police have praised the public who detained a man after a woman was punched while trying to stop a thief.

Officers said a student was at a coffee shop in Milton Street, Nottingham, when a man snatched her laptop and mobile phone from a table.

Her sister's laptop was also taken at about 17:30 BST on Tuesday.

A 47-year-old man, who was arrested at the scene, has been released on conditional bail, the force said.

'Appalling incident'

The student was punched while chasing the suspect in nearby Upper Parliament Street.

Police said several members of the public then intervened and detained the suspect on the ground until officers arrived a short time later.

The stolen items have since been returned.

PC Jake Self said: "This was an appalling incident and I鈥檇 like to commend the members of the public who assisted officers with this arrest.

鈥淏y acting so courageously, they enabled officers to place the man into handcuffs.

鈥淣ottingham is a vibrant city to live in and visit and we are determined to keep it that way."
