A man has sustained a suspected gunshot wound in an attack in Coalisland, County Tyrone.

The man, who is in his 40s, told police he was approached by two men while he was sitting in a vehicle in the town on Wednesday evening.

He reported that a suspected firearm was put through the window of his vehicle and he was shot in the arm some time before 19:00 GMT.

The man was treated in hospital but police said his injury is not thought to be life-threatening.

'Vigilante justice'

"It's appalling that anyone should be attacked in this way, especially in the early evening when the area would have been busy with shoppers and commuters," a PSNI detective inspector said.

"There is no place in our society for this type of vigilante justice and we are fortunate that the outcome was not much more serious."

Police said they are particularly keen to hear from any witnesses who were in The Lines area of Coalisland, from Canal Quay to the car park at the retail premises, between 18:00 and 18:40 GMT.
