The incident happened at about 20:30 BST on 8 August when a woman in her 30s was approached by a man as she walked along King Street, on the bridge over St Alkmund鈥檚 Way.
Derbyshire Police said the man grabbed the woman from behind, punching and kicking her as he tried to steal her bag.
