Plans for a takeaway in Coventry have been turned down by the city council due the number of other outlets in the area.

The local authority refused proposals to turn a Boots store on Daventry Road into a Sam鈥檚 Chicken franchise.

Coventry City Council said the area next to Daventry Road in Cheylesmore already had double the national average of takeaways, 2.33 compared to 1.05 per 1,000 people.

As such, it said granting it would breach policy and and affect local residents' health and wellbeing.

The authority also rejected the plans on the grounds they lacked enough information to show it would avoid "unacceptable" disturbance to neighbours.

It also felt the applicant failed to demonstrate the extraction system would do enough to reduce the noise and smell.

Four residents objected to the plans, raising concerns over a rise in noise and litter, anti-social behaviour, parking pressure and harm to locals' health.

A separate bid for new signage at the unit was approved.

This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations.
