More than 140 arrested for drink and drug driving

A police crackdown on drink and drug driving has led to more than 140 arrests in Devon and Cornwall during December.

Operation Limit involves random checks on motorists to make roads safer.

Devon and Cornwall said they have carried out 354 breathalyser tests, with 91 people arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

They also carried out 97 roadside drug tests, with 50 people arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

Traffic police officer Andy Heason, who is part of the road casualty reduction team, said: "Even a small amount of alcohol or drugs in your system increases the risk of causing serious harm to yourself or other road users.

"We recognise that people want to go out at Christmas and they want to have a good time, but our message is if you're going to drive the car, especially over the Christmas period, don't drink any alcohol at all."

He said there were alternatives to drink driving, such as taking a taxi, using public transport, or joining a , where a designated driver is entitled to free drinks at certain participating pubs and other establishments.
