The M25 was closed near the Dartford Crossing due to a "serious" crash for several hours on Wednesday.
Kent Police said they were called just after 14:30 GMT to the crash involving a motorcycle on the clockwise carriageway.
Both the clockwise and anti-clockwise carriageways were closed due to the incident, with the air ambulance also attending the scene.
The clockwise carriage was the last to open at 20:00 GMT, according to Highways England South East, with long delays remaining in both directions.
A spokesperson said two of four lanes clockwise remained closed "to allow for clear-up works to take place".
The agency warned of delays of two hours clockwise and 30 minutes anti-clockwise and advised motorists to allow extra time.
Traffic provider Inrix said there had been "heavy" traffic on the A2 and A13 as a result of the earlier closure, with congestion through Dartford and Greenhithe as traffic was diverted.
