Emergency services were sent to a power station in Sheffield after the company said there was "an incident" on site.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service initially sent eight engines to the Blackburn Meadows plant on Thursday night.
A spokesperson said: "Anyone living nearby should keep their doors and windows closed. Please avoid the area while crews work."
No details have been given about what prompted the action, which also saw police and the ambulance service attend, but it is understood not to be a fire.
The biomass power station, on the site of the former Tinsley cooling towers, is operated by energy giant E.ON.
A spokesperson for the company said: 鈥淲e can confirm there was an incident at our Blackburn Meadows renewable energy plant this evening (Thursday).
"In line with our safety procedures, we reported this to the Fire Service and are assisting them with their operations.
"We echo their advice to local residents and, as ever, our priority remains the safety of our on-site colleagues and the surrounding community.鈥
