Date set for pensioner's trial over crash death

The trial of a 91-year-old man accused of causing the death of a schoolgirl by dangerous driving is to take place in three months' time.

Eight-year-old Scarlett Rossborough died after a car crashed into a group of children in Carrickfergus in County Antrim on 9 August 2023.

John Noble Lindsay of Prince Andrew Way in the town is charged with causing her death.

At Belfast Magistrates' Court on Wednesday a defence barrister told the judge it was his hope to avoid a trial and that they would seek an adjournment for four weeks to gather more evidence.

The barrister said time was needed so he could appoint a geriatrician to look at his client's life expectancy, as he had a medical condition.

He also pointed to his client's career as a police officer and "exemplary record" which included "never having a penalty point".

Judge Patricia Smyth set a date for trial for 4 November and said it was "a tragedy of unimaginable proportions and I extend my condolences to the family."

Mr Lindsay will remain on bail until that date.
